Summary
The Technology & Innovation (T&I) Principal Engineer and Metallurgist serve as the plant metallurgical engineer and point of contact for technical support for metallurgical issues at the Elmore plant and all other Performance Materials operations as needed.  They will also manage selected research and development projects. This individual provides technical oversight of complex laboratory operations and supports the different laboratory needs of T&I development, operations and marketing. Working with the T&I Lab Supervisor, Pipeline Manager, and Technicians the Principal Engineer will ensure the laboratory operates in an efficient and safe manner. The Technology & Innovation (T&I) Principal Engineer and Metallurgist will also provide written reports on selected laboratory analyses including that for CTS and Operations. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide metallurgical consultation and analysis to the PM business

  • Supports customer visits & data requests

  • Assists in the design of T&I Projects; may execute projects within defined goals; documents required data and observations; assists in the analysis of the data and generation of reports

  • Provide technical guidance for work in Technology & Innovation Laboratory (Lab) to support Projects, Manufacturing Operations and Quality, and Customer tech Service (CTS)

  •  Assists in the design of T&I Projects. May execute projects within defined goals. Documents required data and observations. Assists in the analysis of the data and generation of reports

  • Reviews and approves all CTS projects before they are marked complete; may work to complete CTS project assignments

  • May prepare samples and conduct material analyses as needed to support CTS and T&I activities

  • Responsible for developing Lab procedures and methods

  • With support of T&I Lead Technician, performs weekly audits of Lab safety equipment with support of T&I Lab Supervisor and T&I Innovation Pipeline Manager, ensure general housekeeping in all Lab work areas is maintained

  • Perform detailed cost analysis for new laboratory equipment and processes

  • Comply with and support all EH&S activities while operating in a safe, honest and ethical manner

  • Operate independently of direct management while keeping management informed of progress and any important issues.

  • Influence others throughout the organization in support of sound technical change and innovation

  •  Develop and maintain external technical links

  • Generate, identify, protect and document IP; support through patent filing process as applicable

  • Provide mentorship and coaching for junior engineers and peers monitor focus and keep within established goals and objectives

  • Oversees PM T&I Laboratories with budget of > $3 MM.  Provides consultation to operations processes throughout Materion PM with revenue of > $500 MM.

Qualifications

Education  

Required:

  • Masters or Doctorate in Material Science/Engineering Manufacturing Technology, or Physical Sciences field; Bachelors in materials science field (e.g. Metallurgy, Ceramics or Materials Science) possible but must be specialized or have specific types of experiences related to specifical technical field.

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional technical experience

 Preferred:  

  • Metallurgical science background with experience in casting and thermo-mechanical processing of a variety of alloy systems

  • Expertise in analytical methods for materials including SEM, metallography and chemical analysis

  • Expertise in failure analysis

  • Experience leveraging Lean Six Sigma methodology, tools; Master Black Belt strongly preferred

  • Experience including data acquisition or design, materials/chemical processing technology

  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

  • Industry recognition or active participation external professional organization; prior experience serving as the technical expert and teaching others

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required: 

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead on technical investigations and teams

  • Excellent written and presentation skills

  •  Expertise in data analysis
