Job Description Summary:

The George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC) invites applications for a hands-on Robotics and Autonomous Systems Technologist I. This is a dynamic role for a proactive problem-solver who will be central to the daily operations of our multi-agent autonomy research for teamed air and ground vehicles.

As a key member of our research team, you will be responsible for support across our robotic systems—from fabrication to field deployment to maintenance and troubleshooting. You will manage the operational readiness of our autonomous vehicle fleet, oversee laboratory organization and safety, and coordinate complex field testing at the 2,000-acre RELLIS Campus. This position requires a unique blend of technical aptitude and expertise in mechanical-electrical-computer systems, project coordination, and interpersonal skills. You will work directly with research engineers, mentor student workers, and communicate with project partners to help accelerate military innovation for our nation's defense.

Responsibilities:
Fleet & Systems Management (40%)

- Perform hands-on preventative maintenance and complex repairs on a fleet of autonomous ground and air vehicles, addressing both mechanical and electrical hardware issues (e.g., soldering, component replacement, motor installation).

- Manage the lifecycle of specialized equipment, including the care, maintenance, and safe handling of LiPo batteries and other external power systems.

- Oversee inventory control for high-value assets, assisting in regular audits and maintaining organization of all project hardware using the 5S method.

- Serve as the team's primary Remote Pilot, operating UAS (drones) for research purposes in compliance with FAA regulations.

Design, Prototyping & Fabrication (30%)

- Draft, modify, and verify CAD designs for new and existing robotic components, including camera mounts, landing platforms, and vehicle payloads.

- Utilize 3D printers for rapid prototyping, managing slicer software and model orientation to ensure functional, high-quality prints.

- Fabricate and assemble custom hardware using hand tools, machining equipment, and various fasteners to meet project requirements.

- Collaborate with research engineers on the design, integration, and evaluation of robotic payloads.

Operations, Logistics & Coordination (20%)

- Plan and execute field testing experiments, coordinating all logistics including test schedules, range reservations, equipment transport, and command center setup.

- Assign roles, define timelines, and clearly communicate test objectives to the team to ensure successful data collection.

- Manage procurement for the team by obtaining quotes from vendors, submitting purchase requisitions through university systems (AggieBuy), and managing acquisition accounts.

- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new processes to ensure consistency, safety, and efficiency.

Team & Safety Leadership (10%)

- Serve as the Team Safety Officer, ensuring all operations are conducted in a safe manner and environment.

- Schedule, manage, and assign tasks to student workers and graduate assistants, providing guidance and mentorship.

- Lead the onboarding and training for new hires, ensuring a smooth integration into the team's processes and checklists.

- Communicate project updates and technical status to internal team members and external stakeholders, including government and industry partners.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

- Bachelor's degree in applicable field (e.g. Mechatronics, Engineering Technology, Robotics) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Registration, Certifications, and Licenses:

- Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, a Department of Defense security clearance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Demonstrated experience in mechanical and electrical repair, including soldering, wiring, and troubleshooting complex hardware.

- Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for designing and modifying parts.

- Hands-on experience with fabrication, including the use of hand tools, power tools, and basic machining.

- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.

- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic research team.
