Position Title

Technician III – Met Lab

Job Summary:

The Technician III – Met Lab prepares samples for analysis and performs a wide range of complex metallurgical services. The role requires strong knowledge of various testing disciplines—including mechanical, metallographic, magnetic, and heat‑treat processes—and the ability to operate specialized laboratory equipment with minimal supervision. The technician records and evaluates test data, provides recommendations based on results, and may assist with coordinating daily testing activities within the assigned area.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare samples for metallurgical and mechanical evaluation.
  • Perform complex mechanical tests (hardness, tension, tensile, resistivity, etc.).
  • Conduct metallographic and magnetic tests using etchants, polishing tools, and specialized lab equipment.
  • Collect, record, and evaluate test data.
  • Make recommendations to supervision based on recorded test data.
  • Provide training, direction, and day‑to‑day coordination within the assigned testing area.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Support operations across Mechanical Testing, Preparation, Metallographic Testing, Magnetics Testing, or Heat Treating as needed.

Position Requirements:

Education & Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience as determined by department management.

Relevant Work Experience:

  • Three or more years of relevant experience.

Additional Requirements:

Technical Expertise:

  • Specialized knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, and methods.
  • Proficiency in operating metallurgical and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks across a broad range of testing areas.

Communication & Influencing Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand customer needs and recommend solutions to nonstandard requests.

Problem Solving:

  • Solves moderately complex problems and recommends improvements to standard procedures.

Other:

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work independently.
  • Ability to work in a production‑oriented environment with minimal supervision.
