Job Description

Purpose:

The Fischer Engineering Design Center invites applicants for a full-time Laboratory Technician who, under general supervision, performs a variety of clearly-defined technical functions that support academic projects, academic teaching and research operations in Zachry Labs. Primary areas of focus are/include the Prototyping Center (3D printing, laser cutting, PCB fabrication, foam/composite fabrication) and the Design Studio (Equipment Checkout, space management/organization, oversight of Senior Design teams).  Assistance to the Fabrication Shop (manual and CNC equipment, welding) and FEDC Administration (website development, scheduling software, data storage/management) will be as needed.  Technician will work as part of a team and their specific area(s) of focus will complement the group expertise. Their roll will be a combination of assisting with tasked duties along with independent duties as experience allows.

What we need:

We are actively recruiting for a level I or II Technician.

Minimum qualifications for a Technician I: 

  • High school Diploma with 2 years of related experience. Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum qualifications for a Technician II: 

  • High school Diploma and 3 years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with 3D printing, laser cutting, and PCB fabrication.
  • Experience managing a space with multiple and diverse-needs users.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing lab safety requirements.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of customers.
  • Experience working in STEM environment.
  • Experience in setup, organization, and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing equipment and machinery.
  • Experience constructing, assembling, operating and modifying equipment and machinery.
  • Experience in daily interaction with faculty, students and staff in a diverse learning environment.
  • Experience in assisting and facilitating lab users on academic or research projects.
  • Experience in assisting with planning and supervising of technical operations, including supervision of student workers.
  • Experience in maintaining facility and common areas.
  • Experience in maintaining reference materials, SDS, calibration, safety data forms, shop/lab safety.
  • Experience assisting student teams on project designs and build processes.
  • Experience creating custom prototypes for complex projects.
  • Experience developing and instruction of training materials/courses.
  • Experience with data collection, retention, and manipulation.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and WordPress.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • May be required to work evenings, and weekends as needed
  • Must comply with lab safety PPE requirements

The well-qualified Technician II candidate would possess a moderate level of the experience above.

The SuSu and Mark A. Fischer ’72 Engineering Design Center (FEDC) supports College of Engineering undergraduate academic course work. We provide academic, senior design, and capstone teams access to state-of-the art additive and subtractive manufacturing equipment, most tools needed to build their projects, consultations with professional staff, and build space to complete their projects.
