Technical Superintendent

Main purpose

We are looking for a Technical Superintendent to join our Marine & Technical department. In this role, you will ensure that owned ships are managed with the highest quality of standards and their condition is always kept at the top levels, following global quality standards and best marine practices at all times. Other responsibilities include managing side projects related but not limited to dry docks, retrofit and other technical project end to end for the appointed vessels.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage and monitor the performance of appointed third-party Technical Managers for the owned fleet, including daily operational follow-up and financial performance reporting.

  • Oversee vessel technical matters in coordination with Technical Managers, including procurement and supply monitoring and quality assurance of services, maintaining a cost-conscious approach without compromising on standards.

  • Provide technical expertise and support across newbuilding programmes and existing fleet technology development, spanning all relevant shipping business types.

  • Analyse and document ongoing technical issues and concerns across Trafigura assets, ensuring lessons learned are captured and applied to future projects

  • Conduct OPEX analysis and benchmarking; lead timely dry-dock planning and manage fleet retrofit projects, including ESD, EGCS, and BWTS installations. Attending the ships in frequent intervals and doing preparation / specification / attendance in dry docks

  • Conduct regular vessel attendance and lead dry-dock preparation, specification development, and on-site supervision.

  • Evaluate vessel repair requests submitted by Technical Managers, reviewing quoted costs, timelines, and quality standards in the context of each vessel's trading commitments.

Required qualifications

  • Demonstrable marine and technical expertise, with proven ability to apply these skills in day-to-day operations.

  • Proven project management skills and a collaborative team-working approach.

  • Previous experience as a Technical Superintendent is preferred.

  • A background in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a management role within a Technical Management organisation will be considered a strong asset.

  • Fluency in spoken and written English, with the ability to present confidently to internal and external audiences.

  • Solid experience in vessel inspections and vetting, including the analysis of inspection reports.

  • Experience in marine systems outfitting and integration projects.

  • The ability to assess risk profile of technical points and accurately express these to technical/commercial teams

  • Experienced in introducing vessels into service, including newbuild programmes (plan approval, site supervision, and commissioning), shore-based team recruitment, crewing strategy, and the chartering and commercial acceptance process.

  • Experience in assessing new and second-hand oil and gas tonnage for acquisition, from an operational and technical perspective.

  • Sound understanding of technical management operations, processes, and requirements.

  • Ability to develop and implement company-wide systems and assessments covering safety, performance, and procurement functions

  • Willingness to travel internationally, including periods working abroad at project sites, shipyards, sea trials, or Trafigura offices.
