TACC is seeking a Technical Project Manager to lead the delivery of complex, data-driven research and software development initiatives. This role partners with principal investigators, software engineers, data scientists, and external collaborators to translate scientific objectives into actionable technical plans and successfully deliver scalable data platforms and tools.

Purpose

Lead the planning and delivery of complex, data-driven research and software projects. Partners with investigators, engineers, and collaborators to translate scientific goals into technical plans and deliver scalable solutions on time and within scope.

Responsibilities 

  • Manage Cloud and Security Infrastructure & High-Level Computer Architecture projects
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of research projects, including project execution and management of team members. Work closely with Principal Investigator, manager and stakeholders to document and coordinate project progress
  • Own end-to-end delivery of technical projects (initiation through deployment); Translate research requirements into roadmaps, milestones, and deliverables. Contribute to roadmap planning and proposal support; improve delivery processes
  • Lead Agile or hybrid processes (sprint planning, refinement, retrospectives); Maintain and prioritize backlogs; track work in JIRA/Confluence (or similar)
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, developers, and management teams to provide leadership in delivering project commitments and meeting expectations. Coordinate project goals, tasks and deliverables with cross-functional and multi-institutional stakeholders
  • Manage scope, schedule, risks, and dependencies across multiple projects. Ensure all activities, systems and processes are aligned with data governance and compliance requirements
  • Supports grant- and project-related reporting by collecting, organizing, and submitting documentation from PI and team members for reports, proposals, and other required project materials
  • Lead meetings, keeping clear notes and action items; communicate status, risks, and decisions to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support a variety of sizes and types of events, ranging from smaller events, such as workshops and executive briefings, up to larger events, such as conferences and symposiums
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical, scientific, or related field
  • 3+ years managing technical/software/data projects
  • Experience working with engineering, data science, or research computing teams
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, cross-functional projects
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience with project management tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence)
  • PMP certification required within two years of employment

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 5+ years managing complex, cross-functional technical projects
  • Working understanding of systems (APIs, data pipelines, cloud infrastructure)
  • Experience in research computing, biomedical, or data-intensive environments
  • Experience leading Agile delivery (scrum ceremonies, backlog ownership)
  • Familiarity with data platforms, APIs, cloud infrastructure, or data pipelines
  • Experience coordinating multi-institutional or consortium-based projects
  • Project management certification (PMP, CSM, or equivalent)

Salary Range

$100,000 + depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
