Technical Officer - Institute for Molecular Bioscience

About This Opportunity 

Be part of a dynamic team supporting world-class research at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. In this role, you’ll provide specialist technical expertise by diagnosing faults, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of scientific and laboratory equipment. Your work will ensure researchers have the tools they need to make groundbreaking discoveries.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Diagnose faults and perform repairs on a wide range of scientific and laboratory equipment (mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic), often down to component level (e.g., HPLCs, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, PCR machines, vacuum pumps, shakers, CO₂ incubators).

  • Carry out routine maintenance on scientific/laboratory equipment in line with the scheduled maintenance program and as directed by the Workshop Manager.

  • Maintain accurate records of equipment repair history, log jobs, and update progress in the computer database.

  • Source, cost, and procure parts required for repairs, and liaise with external contractors for outsourced repairs.

  • Communicate effectively with researchers and building services to identify issues and develop satisfactory solutions, while providing excellent customer service to students, researchers, and staff.

  • Design and manufacture laboratory equipment for specific experimental procedures, undertake training on industry-specific equipment, and perform electrical testing of new equipment while recording asset details upon arrival.

About You

  • Electronics or electrical trade certificate, diploma, associate or advanced diploma or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training.

  • Queensland Restricted electrical licence or eligibility to obtain one.

  • Extensive experience post trade qualification with a broad range of mechanical, electronic and electromechanical equipment, including an ability to quickly diagnose and rectify faults in unfamiliar equipment.

  • Knowledge and skills to safely work on mains powered 240VAC equipment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of general engineering and safe use of hand/power tools to manufacture basic parts.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively across diverse backgrounds, while maintaining a professional and service-oriented approach to meeting customer needs.

  • Highly motivated with a strong level of initiative, complemented by sound computer skills and the ability to quickly learn and adapt to different applications.

Appointment to this role is subject to the successful completion of relevant pre-employment checks, which may include verification of the right to work in Australia, qualifications, First Aid and/or CPR certification. This may also include checks relating to gender-based violence matters or other integrity and conduct requirements.
