About The Position


The Senior Technical Officer is responsible for delivering technical operations and support across learning and teaching, research, and industry activities within Environmental Chemistry laboratories and off-campus field sites. 

The role requires demonstrated experience in soil, groundwater, and surface water sampling, along with other relevant environmental sampling techniques. Working collaboratively with teaching and research staff, the incumbent provides expert guidance in experimental design, data acquisition, and data analysis, while delivering high-level training and technical expertise in equipment and methodologies to support the University’s academic and industry engagement activities.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:

1. Proven knowledge and experience in Environmental Chemistry or Environmental Science, including an advanced understanding of sampling, monitoring and analysis of soil, biosolids, groundwater and surface water.

2. Demonstrated expertise working within both laboratory and fieldwork settings with experience in the safe operation of laboratory instruments including CN analysers, FTIR spectrometers, UV-Vis Spectrometers and ion chromatography systems, and field equipment including multiparameter water quality meters, and sampling and monitoring equipment.

3. Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation, regulations and standards with relevant experience in managing safe and compliant operations, preferably within a Higher Education setting.

4. Highly organised with proven ability to prioritise tasks and work effectively in agile and demanding environments, exercising high order analytical and problem-solving skills and sound decision making, and adapting to changing circumstances.

5. Demonstrated commitment to quality and continuous improvement, and a proven ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and systems consistently within the work area.

6. Effective communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team, and with diverse user and stakeholder groups from student to School and College leadership.
