Job Description

The Technical Marketing Specialist plays a pivotal role in accelerating growth, strengthening market credibility, and supporting retention within Old Mutual Group Risk by acting as a technical thought leader and product expert to intermediaries, employers, and internal stakeholders.

The role sits at the intersection of Distribution, Product, Pricing/Actuarial, and Underwriting, translating technical capability into commercially compelling, market-relevant solutions. The incumbent supports complex new business and strategic renewals, influences product and pricing decisions through structured market insight, pricing support, technical expertise and enhances Old Mutual’s external positioning through technical support and thought leadership.

Key Result Areas:

Strategy, Growth, Retention and Market Impact

  • Contribute to and deliver strategic initiatives that drive sustainable growth in Old Mutual’s Group Assurance book.

  • Have a direct line of sight of key group risk clients. Manage and develop partnerships that are mutually beneficial.

  • Strong focus on providing quick to market solutions by leveraging deep understanding of the Group Risk market landscape and pricing philosophies.

  • Support strategies aimed at increasing market penetration, intermediary relevance, and client retention across Group Risk.

  • Monitor new business flows, lapses, take-up rates, and hit ratios, translating insights into targeted growth and retention actions.

  • Develop analytic strategy aimed at providing management with meaningful insights on existing and lost opportunities and detailed repository for refining our future approach.  

  • Provide commercial and technical insight to support pricing governance, within approved authorisation frameworks.

Technical Marketing and Distribution Support

  • Act as a technical and commercial specialist supporting Old Mutual’s Group Assurance distribution channels.
  • Support claims team on client presentations and develop wellness consulting proposition.
  • Partner with Distribution, Product, Pricing, and Actuarial teams to ensure consistent, market-facing technical messaging.
  • Support complex new business, including:
  • Pricing discussions

  • Benefit design optimisation

  • Technical responses to intermediary and employer queries

  • Contribute to the preparation and review of Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and large employer tenders.

Product, Pricing and Proposition Development

  • Provide structured technical input into product development and enhancements, informed by market trends, client needs, and intermediary feedback.

  • Track product-related issues, trends, and gaps relative to competitor offerings and emerging client expectations.

  • Collaborate with actuarial and pricing teams to ensure products are:

  • Commercially competitive

  • Financially sustainable

  • Fit for purpose across target markets

Market Insight and Thought Leadership

  • Drive ongoing research into industry trends, regulatory and legislative developments, competitor positioning, and emerging technologies.

  • Deliver structured competitor and market analysis to inform pricing, product, and distribution decisions.

  • Contribute to Old Mutual’s thought leadership positioning in Group Risk through presentations, insights, and external engagement.

  • Launch new and updated products and services through intermediary engagements and product launches

  • Represent Old Mutual on relevant industry forums, advisory bodies, or employer engagements where required.

Collaboration and Enablement

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including Actuarial and Pricing, Client Services and Claims, Marketing and Digital Experience, Legal, Compliance, and IT.

  • Ensure new solutions and initiatives are operationally feasible, compliant, and aligned to Old Mutual’s values and governance standards.

  • Contribute to a strong service and innovation culture that promotes collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Skills, Knowledge,Qualifications and Experience required:

Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified or near-qualified Actuary or equivalent technical qualification.

  • 4–6+ years’ experience in Group Insurance / Employee Benefits / Reinsurance.

  • Strong exposure to group risk products and pricing concepts.

  • Experience in pricing, product, technical marketing, or commercial support roles within group insurance.

  • Client-facing or intermediary-facing experience with proven ability to manage senior relationships.

  • Commercial exposure to new business tenders, pricing sign-off processes, and deal structuring.

  • Knowledge of umbrella funds, retirement benefits, or investments is advantageous.

  • Exposure to digital enablement, automation, or analytics-driven decision-making is beneficial.

  • Strong written and presentation skills, with experience engaging executive and trustee audiences.
