Technical Lead Software Engineer

IDEXX Veterinary Software is on a mission to deliver the first vertical SaaS platform dedicated to Animal Health. As we continue to grow, we are expanding our engineering capability to tackle a wide range of complex challenges across our Clinical, Practice Management, and Client Engagement domains.

 

Our goal is to build additional squads within each domain to increase delivery capacity, accelerate our technical roadmap, and unify our portfolio of cloud platforms and applications.

 

We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead Software Engineer to join our Auckland R&D hub. In this role, you will lead one of the squads, taking ownership of complex problem spaces such as electronic clinical records, efficient practice management workflows, and client engagement solutions that strengthen the relationship between veterinarians and pet parents.

 

You will lead a team responsible for delivering high-quality, scalable solutions across our cloud-based platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role for a technically strong engineer who can take initiative, guide architectural decisions, and drive meaningful outcomes within one of the domains.

 

We work with modern technologies including TypeScript, Go, and cloud-native architectures, with a strong emphasis on DevOps, automation, and system reliability. You’ll contribute to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and resilient distributed systems. Some key responsibilities of your role:  

  • Lead by example as a trusted technical role model and mentor

  • Design and document scalable technical solutions

  • Build and deliver large-scale or complex projects that are fit for purpose

  • Write clean, well-crafted, scalable, and maintainable code

  • Monitor, evaluate, and continuously improve solutions post-release (Agile)

  • Write high-quality unit tests

  • Perform senior-level code reviews to ensure robustness and reliability

  • Refactor core framework components to improve performance and scalability

  • Contribute to high-level technology and architecture discussions

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to solve challenges at scale

What you need to succeed:   

  • Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer leading the delivery and quality of one or more engineering teams

  • Strong technical capability in software design, architecture, and implementation

  • Deep understanding of object-oriented design principles, modular design, and common design patterns

  • Experience building, consuming, and evolving modern APIs

  • Experience guiding and supporting Agile delivery practices, including Scrum, Kanban, and other frameworks

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and solve complex engineering problems

  • Experience improving engineering culture, processes, and ways of working

  • Strong understanding of cloud principles and best practices

  • Hands-on experience with modern web technologies (e.g. React)

  • Experience with backend technologies such as Go, TypeScript, or other OO languages

  • Experience working with AWS and cloud infrastructure platforms

  • Solid experience with unit testing and automated testing practices
