Your Role
The Technical Director is a senior leader within the APME region, accountable for design excellence, technical rigor, and design resilience across all projects. As a recognized expert, you will lead the delivery of complex projects, particularly within the Critical Facilities Practice Area.
On a day-to-day basis, you will drive the growth of the practice by overseeing the delivery of high-quality design and technical outcomes, working closely with Critical Facilities Practice Area and Studio Leaders across APME.
You will act as the primary technical authority and key interface with clients and builders, guiding projects from concept through construction. You will also ensure excellence in the preparation and review of proposals, contracts, and consultant agreements, and oversee internal project accounting and billing processes in collaboration with project management team members.
In parallel, you will strengthen technical design culture, mentor future leaders, and advance Gensler’s external technical leadership within the broader design and construction community across APME.
What You Will Do
- Work closely with the Critical Facilities team and leadership across the region and be accountable for design excellence and technical quality across all Critical Facilities projects across APME, ensuring alignment with Gensler’s design principles and performance expectations.
- Work closely with the Critical facilities team and leadership across the region and be accountable for the technical development, coordination, and resolution of building systems, materials, construction detailing, and documentation throughout all phases of project delivery.
- Lead the preparation and review of proposals, contracts, and consultant agreements, and oversee project financial processes, including accounting and billing, in partnership with project teams.
- Serve as the primary client, consultant, and contractor interface for technical design, delivery, and implementation.
- Attend key client meetings, lead and participate in strategy, review project progress and provide leadership, inspiration and motivation to the design team to ensure the highest quality design documentation is produced and client satisfaction is achieved.
- Advocate for design quality, constructability, and execution excellence across all projects.
- Lead and oversee QA/QC processes across multiple Critical Facilities projects and teams at various stages of delivery, with particular focus on design intent, life safety, code compliance, and risk mitigation.
- Guide teams in the interpretation and application of building codes, standards, and regulatory requirements across diverse APME jurisdictions.
- Advance the understanding that design resilience and sustainability are shared responsibilities across all team members.
- Assure a collaborative and integrated approach with other disciplines, including structural, MEP, civil, landscape, lighting, AV, and specialist consultants.
- Build internal client’s trust and loyalty within Gensler and foster the development of additional business through exemplary project delivery.
- Mentor and develop the next generation of technical and design leadership through active project involvement, coaching, and review.
- Advance technical design culture within the studio and region through mentoring, resources, discourse, initiatives, and participation in recruiting efforts.
- Represent Gensler externally through leadership within the design, construction, and sustainability communities, contributing to thought leadership and industry engagement across APME.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture
15+ years of project experience in an architectural practice
- Proven performance directing the design realization process on multiple complex projects, especially Critical Facilities projects across all phases, both internally and externally.
- Demonstrated sensibility to the design process, with the ability to translate creative intent into technically rigorous and buildable solutions.
Experience with Revit, Rhino, Bluebeam Revu, and MS Office
Expert knowledge of building codes, standards, building construction, and green building strategies.
Demonstrated ability to communicate code implications to fellow staff at all levels of development.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with construction contractors and subcontractors.
- Highly collaborative with the ability to work effectively across cultures, disciplines, and markets within the APME region.
- Proven proactive leadership qualities and the ability to influence without authority.
Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and sustainable building practices required. Portfolios should include at least 1 project with this particular focus, and candidates should be prepared to talk to this in their interview, especially built projects with LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard, Fitwell and /or Net Zero Building certification.
