Job Description :

The Client Application Technology team is dedicated to creating compelling experiences that deliver Reuters' outstanding journalism to the world’s most informed professionals. The team aims to increase discovery, optimise conversion, and drive engagement across Thomson Reuters products and services. The technology focuses on web development and substantial backend service integration.

You will work with a distributed team of software developers, quality engineers, and product managers focused on developing and integrating platforms and services that power Reuters experiences, including content creation, curation, publishing, distribution, and e-commerce.

As an experienced technologist, you’ll lead the development of solutions that scale and will consistently innovate. You will work closely with solution architects and senior software engineers to develop high-quality, maintainable software.

Major Responsibilities

The Backend Tech Lead Engineer will consult and be responsible for all aspects of key software deliverables, from understanding business requirements and planning activities to developing code and proactively managing risks. We expect your work to demonstrate a strong technical background and a commitment to writing concise, scalable code. You will mentor/collaborate with fellow engineers to share knowledge, design, develop, test, and deploy software. Additionally, you will help coordinate with development partners to ensure features are released on time and within budget. You will modify existing software to fix errors or enhance performance when necessary.

You will provide leadership and adhere to standards and best practices for software development and developer productivity. You will maintain long-term client relationships and networks. 

About you :

  • Demonstrate best-in-class software engineering skills to develop secure, tested, optimised, scalable code.
  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, ops engineers, QA engineers, and other teams and stakeholders to solve innovative problems using out-of-the-box solutions.
  • Write code that an SDE unfamiliar with the software can understand.
  • Conduct code reviews. 
  • Assess existing software applications and identify where enhancements can improve them.
  • Identify and resolve the root cause of software defects.
  • Identify and document product architecture and solution design
  • Communicate clearly and effectively via GitHub, Slack, MS Teams, JIRA, etc., to keep all stakeholders in the loop on relevant issues.
  • Interact thoughtfully and professionally with everyone, including non-technical colleagues.
  • Work with central technology teams to establish and adhere to best practices.
  • Present practical input for strategic technology decisions.
  • Comply with all professional departmental and company best practices.
  • Help translate business requirements into technical needs and actions.
  • Drive predictability in the project outcomes through process and diligent oversight. 
  • Actively contribute to the evolution of processes and standards. Lead improvement efforts.
  • Promote more effective use of productivity tools.
  • Follow Agile development methodologies and mentor team members in this area. 

About the Role :

  • Must have 4 years of experience building applications/platforms with cloud native/microservice architecture, including experience with IaaS, PaaS, and container deployment. 
  • Must have 3 years of experience with modern collaborative development tools (Git, CI/CD pipelines)
  • Employers will accept any suitable combination of education, training, or experience. 
  • Minimum 10+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and TypeScript with Node.js frameworks 
  • Solid experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs; familiarity with GraphQL is a plus.
  • Expertise with relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and one or more NoSQL stores (Redis, MongoDB, DynamoDB, or similar); strong SQL skills and data modelling.
  • Hands-on with cloud platforms (AWS) and containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • CI/CD practices and tooling (GitHub Actions).
  • Knowledge of security best practices, such as OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, TLS, secrets management, and least privilege (IAM).
  • Strong testing culture: unit/integration/e2e testing, contract testing (JUnit, Jest, Testcontainers, Pact).
  • Prior experience as a Tech lead will be an added plus
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and system design skills.
