THE ROLE:
Reporting to the Controller, this role serves as a key extension of the Controller’s office, supporting high judgment financial reporting, complex accounting matters, and interaction with senior stakeholders and auditors.
You will bring independent technical judgment, a strong control mindset, and the ability to anticipate reporting and accounting issues before they escalate. In this role, you are relied upon as a trusted advisor to the Controller, not just a reviewer of work.
This role is best suited for an experienced financial reporting professional who is comfortable owning accounting conclusions, coaching senior accountants, and operating with limited direction in a fast moving, complex organization.
The successful candidate will be an effective leader who takes pride in developing talent within their organization and is committed to upholding PETRONAS’ culture of safety, innovation, integrity, and collaboration within an entrepreneurial environment.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:
Financial Reporting & Technical Leadership
- Own the quality, completeness, and technical integrity of IFRS financial statements
- Form, document, and defend accounting conclusions on complex transactions, judgments, and estimates
- Exercise final level review and judgment over financial statements prior to Controller review
- Act as first point of escalation for complex accounting matters before they reach the Controller
Advisor to the Controller
- Proactively identify financial reporting risks, judgment areas, and emerging issues
- Provide clear recommendations, including alternatives and implications, to support executive decision making
- Support the Controller in auditor discussions, technical positions, and escalation management
Leadership & Accountability
- Lead and develop a team of designated accountants, with a focus on judgment, ownership, and professionalism
- Set the technical and professional standard for the financial reporting function
- Set expectations for quality, timeliness, and accountability across the reporting function
External & Internal Stakeholders
- Independently lead day to day interaction with external auditors on financial reporting and technical accounting matters
- Resolve audit issues independently, escalating only significant or sensitive matters
- Communicate complex accounting matters clearly to non-technical stakeholders
WHAT YOU BRING:
- CPA designation with significant post‑designation experience in financial reporting
- Deep IFRS expertise, with demonstrated ability to independently resolve complex accounting issues
- Strong oil and gas and Joint Venture accounting experience
- At minimum 2 years’ experience leading financial accounting teams
- Proven ability to operate as a senior technical resource and escalation point
- Experience partnering closely with Controllers, CFOs, or senior leadership
- Confidence and credibility to lead discussions with auditors without reliance on others
- Advanced proficiency in ERP systems (e.g. SAP), Workiva and Microsoft Excel.
- Systems-minded with a passion for leveraging technology and process optimization to drive efficiency and accuracy across the Finance function.
- Brings a “can do”, “figure it out” attitude—resourceful, resilient, and motivated to overcome obstacles without waiting for step-by-step instructions.
Job postings are typically only open for applications for two weeks so please submit your resume today.
