Job Description

Job Summary:

The Tax Accountant is responsible for preparation of supporting schedules and other information to be utilized by an outside CPA firm to prepare Wawa S-Corporation income tax returns. Prepare monthly motor fuel, excise tax, mercantile, sales and personal property tax returns.

Principal Duties:

  • Complete motor fuel, sales, business privilege and personal property tax returns, including performing research, reviewing related returns, monthly journal entries and assessments of personal property. Resolve problems, coach associates, and assist in developing streamlined processes.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and other information to be utilized by Wawa’s outside CPA firm to prepare Wawa’s S corporation income tax returns.
  • Assist Tax Compliance Associates in the preparation of motor fuels and other excise tax returns.
  • Participate in the monthly closing and accounting processes for the Tax Department by preparing/posting entries and conducting account reconciliations.
  • Complete sales & use returns for Wawa’s subsidiary, Wawa Equipment Company.
  • Complete monthly balance sheet analyses for sales and use accounts and personal property & mercantile liability accounts.
  • Respond to tax-related inquiries from the call center & various internal departments.
  • Assist with the application and tracking of EITC & OSTC tax credits.
  • Maintain the spreadsheets used to track windfall and shortfall tax benefits for stock-based compensation.
  • File & pay annual reports for Wawa, Inc. and its subsidiaries.
  • Responsible for interaction with taxing authorities including audits, resolution of notices and other inquiries conducted by those authorities
  • Prepare monthly LIFO (last-in, first-out) adjustment and annual Uniform Capitalization calculations and related journal entries.
  • Assist with training and managing the workload of the tax department intern.
  • Assume role of tax subject matter expert for indirect tax projects and questions.
  • Create state-level and store-level personal property asset reports to be used to complete personal property returns for multiple states. 
  • Manage personal property & mercantile tracking calendar. Ensure returns and bills are processed in a timely manner to avoid penalties and/or late fees.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and assist with the calculation of the annual gift card breakage M-3 adjustment.
  • Perform other recurring accounting duties and special projects as assigned by the management of the Tax Department.
  • Maintain and manage the monthly compliance/close checklist.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred
  • Must have at least 1-2 years of accounting or business experience
  • Experience/Knowledge of sales/use and motor fuel taxes preferred
  • Experience in SAP G/L  preferred
  • Experience with Excel, PowerPoint and Word
