Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Navigation, Intelligence and Connectivity Division, Engineering and Sciences is seeking a Systems Engineering Director 1. This position will be onsite in San Diego, CA and will lead the System Engineering organization, for the Connectivity and Network Solutions Business Unit, reporting to the Senior Director of the Engineering organization. As the Systems Engineering Director, you will be responsible for leading a highly dynamic, growing team of more than 500 systems and test engineers. You will be responsible for organizational strategy, execution, process, tools, staffing, employee development and cross functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the long‑term vision, roadmap, and standards for the Systems Engineering function.
- Align functional goals with business unit and division strategy.
- Technical Authority
- Review and advise on technical decisions, trade studies, metrics, risk mitigation plans, proposals and estimates to complete for critical programs.
- Program Support & Oversight
- Partner with Program Management to ensure engineering deliverables meet schedule, cost, performance and quality expectations.
- Improve engineering competitiveness by establishing metrics and other measures focused on execution
- Workforce Planning & Talent Development
- Build, coach, and retain a high‑performing technical talent.
- Champion professional development, certification, and knowledge‑sharing initiatives.
- Workforce planning, staffing, retention and employee engagement efforts.
- Process Improvement & Compliance
- Lead continuous‑improvement efforts through automation and process efficiencies
- Ensure compliance to sector Principles and Operating Procedures (PrOP)
Basic Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizenship is required
- A current/active US Government Top Secret clearance is required with the ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP)
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics or related technical fields with 12 years of experience; Master’s degree with 10 years of experience; PhD with 8 years of experience
- Demonstrated experience leading systems development across the product development lifecycle (from design – to – systems deployment), either as a lead systems engineer, chief engineer, product IPT leader or program manager
- Experience developing and testing communication and/or multi-INT payloads
- Demonstrated leadership of design reviews, independent reviews and hardware/software integration efforts
- Engineering functional experience with demonstrated knowledge of hiring, staffing, engineering metrics and training resources, processes, and tools
- Experience leading organizations of more than 150 people
Preferred Qualifications:
- Chief engineer experience
- Experience leading product line planning and execution
- Experience with on-site support of operational users
- Experience leading engineering efforts on a corporate watchlist program
- Multi-sector engineering leadership experience

Primary Level Salary Range: $203,900.00 - $305,900.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
