Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Multi-Domain Operations, and Missile Defense Integration Business Unit (BU), has an exciting career opportunity for a Senior Principal Software Engineer – Level 4 to join our Internal Research and Development (IRAD) Team. This position is in Colorado Springs, CO.
Position Overview:
As a Sr Principal Systems Engineer – Level 4 supporting Internal Research and Development (IRAD), you will work in a collaborative environment to understand system requirements and perform systems engineering for an innovative Fire Control System.
Essential Functions:
- Perform model-based systems engineering (MBSE) functional and behavior analysis for a software and hardware integrated system.
- Participate in a MBSE environment to develop system-of-systems requirements via system/component trade studies and analysis.
- Contributes to publishing change notices to system specification and update of requirements databases, architectural models, interface definitions, and trace system and Element level requirements.
- Document analysis results in reports and briefings for critique and review by internal and external stakeholders.
- Create and present briefings within the team and external stakeholders.
- Duties will include leading system engineering in the development of requirements, model, and tracking status of verification.
- Perform detailed tracking of changes to system requirements and verification
- Decompose hardware and software requirements from the Prime item design specification (PIDS).

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 8 years of related experience, or a Master's STEM Degree and 6 years of related experience, or 4 years of experience with a PhD.
- Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% to support business needs
- Strong prior experience with the use of MSOSA (Cameo) and DOORS.
- Applicants must demonstrate a strong hardware and software technical background in architecture development, functional decomposition, requirements development and allocation, and interface definition with system-modelling tools.
- Applicants must have a strong background in MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering) and the use of SysML to describe behaviors of a complex DoD system.
- Must be able to support an in-person / closed-area work environment
- Familiarity with software development requirements and testing methodologies.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team with limited direction.
- Self-motivated and able to work in a dynamic team environment with both collocated and geographically dispersed team members with varying experience levels.
- Possess strong verbal and written communications skills necessary to work effectively in a small technical team environment, and to accurately represent requirement/test perspectives to system architects, software designers, other test and test support personnel, and the Government customer.
- Working knowledge of the Agile process in software development and internal testing environments.
- An understanding of the Systems Engineering Lifecycle.
- Experienced, "System Thinker", comfortability working on a high-paced, high pressure, dynamic environment.
- V&V planning and execution experience.

- Process Improvement & Analysis:
- Kaizen facilitation, root cause analysis, SIPOC, and value stream mapping
- Process risk identification and waste elimination
- Lean-Agile Principles:
- Training and implementation of Lean-Agile principles (Modules 1-5)
- Development of RACI (Roles & Responsibilities) matrices
- Software Automation & Tools:
- Jira/Confluence administration, automation, and CI/CD pipeline setup (e.g., Jenkins)
- Programming expertise in Python, Java, and C++
- Version control strategy expertise (Git, branching strategies) and Gradle plugin development
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Team onboarding support, documentation, presentation proofreading, and dry-run reviews
- Teams channel management and standardization efforts
- Additional Technical Skills:
- Experience with Linux and Windows environments
- Development of unit, integration, end-to-end, and behavior-driven tests
- Software application familiarity
Primary Level Salary Range: $129,300.00 - $193,900.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
