Title

System Director of Risk Management

The Director manages day-to-day operations of the Risk Management Department and maintains a comprehensive program designed to identify, eliminate or reduce, and insure against potential risks to Bronson Healthcare Group and its subsidiaries.  The Director leads, provides advice and strategy on risk related issues in collaboration with a wide variety of business partners both inside and outside Bronson.  The Director oversees the following functions:  Risk Management, Claims Management and Insurance Services. 

    Responsibilities include:

    • Development and maintenance of key performance indicators including analysis of risk management data gathered through the investigation of events, patient safety reports and other reporting mechanisms.
    • Development of decision making tools and reports allowing for robust, risk based decision making of leaders.
    • Development and implementation of organizational changes, in cooperation with business partners, based on best practice risk mitigation strategies, risk assessments, organizational experience, industry trends, or emerging Michigan and Federal laws that impact clinical services.
    • Creation and execution of a comprehensive risk management educational plan for employees and workforce members throughout the system.
    • Present risk and insurance updates, reports and education at Executive and Board level meetings.
    • Collaborate with senior leaders in the management of critical, sensitive events that carry financial and reputational risk as well as risk to workforce members.
    • Provide day-to-day risk expertise and support to leaders, providers and employees at all levels within the organization through a variety of mechanisms.  Risk Management Services are available 24/7, 365.
    • Demonstrates skills in investigation of complex clinical concerns, using best practice resources to guide advice and decision making.
    • Passion for and experience in a variety of investigation techniques, root cause analysis, failure mode analysis and other risk stratification and prevention techniques.
    • Coordinates efforts to comply with and learn from risk partners and regulatory agencies through the risk assessment or complaint process.
    • Build a dynamic risk management team, leading the team to achieve organizational and departmental goals.  Performs all aspects to people management.
    • Develops and administers the departmental budget, including oversight and development of the system’s insurance budget as well as financial information shared monthly reflecting claim activity.
    • Oversees all aspects of the professional and general liability claims management and risk financing program.  This includes oversight of both self-insurance and commercial lines of insurance: 
    • Oversees investigation of all actual incidents/accidents/events that could lead to financial loss, including professional liability and general liability.
    • Ensures collection of all information necessary to prepare for the defense of claims.
    • Serves as Liaison to brokers and insurance company representatives in negotiating and settling claims.  Directs conferences with claimants, attorneys, and insurance carriers, when applicable.
    • Interacts with hospital legal counsel, insurance carriers, and patients/families to effect settlement.
    • Provides direction and advice to medical staff as necessary in connection with malpractice litigation and medico legal matters.
    • Retrospectively analyzes claims data in an effort to identify trends or practices, which may be addressed by loss prevention education.
    • Reviews and maintains insurance policies.
    • Participates in negotiating of policy provisions.
    • Assess appropriate reserve funding levels, both insured and self-insured, in conjunction with an actuary.
    • Builds a culture of compliance.  Encourages a reporting environment.  Maintains awareness of and models compliance with state and federal law (HIPAA, EMTALA and Fraud and Abuse reporting) as well as organizational policies and compliance requirements specific to the functional area.

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a health care related field.  Master’s degree preferred.
    • 8 years’ experience in healthcare preferred.
    • Five years' experience in risk management preferred.     
    • CPHRM preferred or willing to obtain within three years of hire.
