Job Title

System Architect

Job Description

Job Summary:

As a System Architect you are expected to drive the design and implementation of integrated systems within the Workcells Robotics team. This role will focus on ensuring that hardware, software, and networking components work together seamlessly to optimize the performance and reliability of Robotics operations. You are expected to be a dynamic and experienced System Architect to join our Agile team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and overseeing the architecture of complex systems, ensuring that they align with business objectives and deliver value to stakeholders. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to implement Agile methodologies, facilitating rapid iterations and continuous improvement throughout the development process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Architecture Design:
    • Develop and define the architecture for our systems, including hardware and software components used in material handling applications (e.g., conveyor systems, automated storage and retrieval systems, and robotics).
    • Create and maintain comprehensive architecture documentation, including system diagrams, interface specifications, and integration points.
  • Requirements Gathering and Analysis:
    • Collaborate with stakeholders, including operations teams, IT, and product management, to gather and analyse functional and non-functional requirements for our systems.
    • Ensure that architecture aligns with business objectives, regulatory standards, and operational needs.
  • Agile and Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives, to foster collaboration and transparency.
    • Work with Chief Product Owner, System Architects and Product Owners, Release Train Engineer, and Scrum Masters to prioritize architectural initiatives and align them with business goals.
    • Work closely with software engineers, network specialists, and hardware developers to ensure the seamless integration of our systems.
    • Facilitate design reviews and architecture discussions to promote alignment and collaboration across all teams.
  • Technology Assessment and Integration:
    • Evaluate emerging technologies, including IoT devices, edge computing, and data analytics tools, to enhance material handling systems.
    • Recommend technologies and ensure their compatibility with existing infrastructure.
  • System Security and Compliance:
    • Implement security best practices and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards (e.g., Machinery Directive, ISO, ISA/IEC).
    • Work with cybersecurity teams to develop risk assessments and mitigation strategies for OT systems.
  • Prototyping, Testing and Validation:
    • Oversee the development of prototypes and conduct testing to validate system performance against requirements.
    • Coordinate the integration and testing of all Robotic components to ensure reliable operation.
    • Support the development of prototypes and proofs of concept to validate architectural designs and gather feedback.
    • Ensure that systems are tested thoroughly and that quality assurance processes are integrated into the Agile workflow.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Analyse system performance metrics and user feedback to identify opportunities for optimization and innovation.
    • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in OT to drive improvements in system architecture and design.
  • Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:
    • Maintain thorough documentation of system architecture, design decisions, and processes for compliance and reference.
    • Provide training and support to engineering and operations teams on architecture principles and practices.
  • Qualifications:
    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
    • Experience: 12-14 / 16-18 years of experience in system design or engineering, preferably 6-8 / 8-10 years within the material handling or logistics sector, with a solid understanding of Agile methodologies.
    • Technical Skills:
      • Proficiency in system architecture modelling tools (e.g., Enterprise Architect, MATLAB/Simulink, IBM Rational, ArchiMate, SysML) and software design methodologies.
      • Knowledge of industrial protocols (e.g., Profinet, DeviceNet, Profibus, OPC UA, Modbus) and networking technologies
    • Agile Skills: Experience working in Agile environments, including familiarity with Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) and tools (e.g., JIRA, Trello).
    • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with experience evaluating complex systems.
    • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying technical concepts to various audiences.
