Job Description

The Survey Assistant Manager applies specialized expertise in Construction Surveying and oversees all survey activities within a designated project area. This role includes mentoring and supervising field survey crews, ensuring accurate data collection, and coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders to support project objectives.

  • Support the Survey Manager and the project primarily in Surface Construction works

  • Having experience and skills to cover temporarily for any surveying position within the project as Survey Manager, Surveyor, Survey Coordinator, and Survey Drafter.

  • Coordinates and supervises survey crews.

  • Coach and mentor junior surveyors both in Elevated Guideway and Stations as needed.

  • Complete various field survey requests and measurements assigned

  • Setup, configuration and troubleshooting survey equipment.

  • Ensure equipment is maintained and calibrated.

  • Provide work files (DTM, linework, etcetera) for accurate layout and correct installation by field staff.

  • Helps maintain and verify provided control network

  • Coordinate and undertake planning and implementation of survey requirements to facilitate construction activities.

  • Assist in the evaluation of potential field problems, quantity calculations and quality control.

  • Provide cut / fill grids for earthwork operations

  • May perform layout work at various stages of construction as specified by the survey manager.

  • Direct survey crews or directly perform as-built conditions checks that require surveying techniques.

  • Maintain accurate survey records, documentation, and stamped submittals.

  • Monitor work being completed in the field where surveying techniques are required.

  • Communicate with operations, engineers, and subcontractors to complete surveying tasks.

  • Manage As Built information and digital records

  • Maintain accurate field notes and survey reports

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Must have a solid understanding of safety requirements on an active construction site and applicable safety policies 

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Construction surveying and Transit infrastructure.

  • Ability to retrieve design drawings and documents, validate it, and prepare layout data for field crews.

  • Ability to review and verify field data, prepare drawings and calculations (quantities, earthworks…)

  • Survey Control Network planning and implementation, densification, field measurements and processing with MicroSurvey Star*Net software.

  • Knowledge of survey practices and methods, engineering design, and applicable standards.

  • Familiar with wide range of survey duties including earthworks, structural, utilities and control. 

  • Scanning, GNSS/GPS, total station, and levelling experience (Leica preferred).

  • Strong computer skills and proficient in the use of office, data, surveying and engineering-based software

  • Excellent organizational skills. Good oral and written communication skills.

  • AutoDesk Civil3D.

  • Valid Driving License.

PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Post-secondary education in Surveying, Geomatics, Geodesy or related.

  • Minimum 5 years working on Metrolinx lead projects.

  • UAV planning, operation and processing.

  • MicroStation, AutoDesk Infraworks, BIM (Revit, Navisworks), GIS (ArcGIS)

Work Conditions

Adherence to Safety policies, project Charter and values. 
(50-75%) Project office or Site office in-person 5 days per week. Seating, standing… typical office conditions. 
(25-50%) On-site activities (including GO Train Corridor): Field crews Training and Supervision. Survey work when required. Sire visits. Walking, climbing ladders, working at heights, lifting equipment up to 15-20 kg, working in any non-dangerous weather conditions, driving.

Total compensation for this role includes an annual salary in the range of 120k-160k depending on working experience, education, and certifications, benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, training , and RSP matching contribution
