Major Duties:

  • These positions serve as a Survey Aid for the Division of Lands and Minerals.
  • Assist Land Surveyors by carrying and setting up equipment to survey land and prepare a job site by clearing timber and overgrowth.
  • Operate various rods such as leveling rods, grade rods, and level staffs to measure distances and determine elevations for land surveying.
  • Assist Land Surveyors in setting survey monuments (digging holes with shovels and rock bars for prolonged periods).
  • Assist with recording and retrieving data using various technology.

No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify for the GS-03 level you must meet the following: General Experience: Applicants must possess 6 months of general experience. Examples of general experience may include working in any professional, technical, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of survey programs or techniques of collecting and recording data. OR Education: To qualify based on education, you must have successful completion of one year (45 quarter or 30 semester hours) of study above high school that included at least included at least one course in surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualification requirements for this position with an equivalent combination of post high school education and general experience to meet total experience requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles. Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.
