Are you ready to take the next step in your healthcare career? The Surgical Tech Program offers SSM Health employees the opportunity to train as certified surgical technologists—a vital role in the operating room that ensures safe and efficient surgical procedures.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Minimum .5 FTE (benefit eligible)
  • Active employment status
  • In good standing with SSM Health
  • Current CPR certification 
  • Employed for at least 90 days prior to start date of program (January 26th, 2026)
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Course Requirements

Online Courses (unpaid):

  • Professionalism in Allied Health (32 hours)
  • Introduction to Human Anatomy & Medical Terminology (96 hours)
  • Surgical Technology (160 hours) + onsite skills practice

Clinical Experience:

  • 125 Surgical Case Scrub-Ins (14–16 weeks)

Program Design

  • Self-paced online courses
  • Mentorship from an experienced Surgical Tech coordinator
  • 16 hours of hands-on skills training during the third course
  • Transition to a full-time Surgical Tech Student role for clinical experience
  • Clinical hours are paid at a student flat rate based on region
  • Each participant is paired with a trained Surgical Tech mentor and preceptors during scrub experiences
  • Upon completion, SSM Health will make a good faith effort to offer a Surgical Technologist position. Please note that economic and staffing conditions may affect availability, FTE status, and location of positions.

Job Summary:

Provided surgical tech care to patients within the student scope of practice under the direct supervision of surgical technologist preceptor or registered nurse.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Practices and implements the technical components of patient care.
  • Practices the preparation of equipment, supplies and resource needed based on the patient's plan of care.
  • Practices accurate and timely communication of information to the Registered Nurse regarding patients in their care.
  • Practices the correct handling and labeling of all specimens.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Currently enrolled in a surgical technologist training program

EXPERIENCE

  • No experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Constant use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Constant lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Frequent lifting/moving patients.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching and gripping.
  • Frequent use of clear vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Frequent use of speech to share information through oral communication.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing over 50 lbs.
  • Occasional use of clear vision at 20 feet or more.
  • Occasional use of sitting, squatting, twisting and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Occasional keyboard use/data entry.
  • Rare kneeling.
