Surgical Technologists play a vital role in the operating room by supporting surgeons and Registered Nurses throughout surgical procedures. They are responsible for maintaining a safe, sterile environment and ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly prepared and available to support high-quality patient care.In this role, Surgical Technologists perform a range of critical tasks, including setting up sterile fields, verifying equipment and supplies, performing surgical counts, and assisting during procedures by passing instruments and anticipating the needs of the surgical team. They also prepare sterile dressings and ensure instruments are properly handled and processed for sterilization, contributing to efficient workflow and optimal patient outcomes.

Although this role is primarily aligned with Plastics, the position includes cross-training in ENT, with the flexibility to support both service lines as needed. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in expanding their clinical skill set across specialties while contributing to a dynamic and collaborative team environment.

A caregiver in this position works full-time| days| Orientation is 3 months 7:00am -3:30pm Mon-Fri| a shift will be assigned towards the end of orientation but is typically 8s or 10s| call rotation is required once out of orientation, call window is 1 hour ready for surgery at Main Campus. 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).  

  • Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.  

  • Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. 

  • Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients. 

  • Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.  

  • Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”  

  • Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition.  

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) 

  • OR Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program 

  • Certification of either CST or TS-C required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program: 

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). 

  • Certified Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT). 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Surgical Tech experience  


Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.

  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
