Coverage Times: weekend days, weekend nights, weekday nights and any holiday which are all times for which BIDP makes available the SHO program for all subspecialties to use. Shift starts promptly at 7am and 7pm and ends accordingly. Face to Face sign out is mandatory without exception.
3. Responsibility and Priority Hierarchy in treatment and triage of surgical patients work flow. Refer to Supplement 1. Collaborative communication between SHO and surgical attending’s in identifying, assigning and assessing care. SHO may provide assistance for established inpatient consults, rounding, discharge and management when work volume and acuity allow otherwise will be deferred back to “Responsibility and Priority Hierarchy” and attending of service. SHO has the ultimate task of identifying and triaging his/own responsibility.
4. Performance of major invasive procedures. Procedures shall be undertaken under specific written protocols, which have been developed between the Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director of Surgery, Chief of Surgery, administrative organizational leader of program and the PA/MD. Refer to Supplement 2. Based on previous proof of credentialing competency elsewhere or if new competency will follow “Invasive Procedural Competency Pathway” as described. Each pathway completion will require assessment and acknowledgment of completion by supervising clinical leaders.
5. Performance of surgical consultations. Consultations shall be undertaken under specific written protocols, which have been developed between the Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director of Surgery, administrative organizational leader of program and PA/MD. Refer to Supplement 3.
6. Surgical House Officer may be a Massachusetts licensed, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner or Physician whom meets the minimal organizational procedural and clinical competency requirements which are to include but no limited to:
a. Co-Surgeon and First Assistant proficiency to assist in all sub specialties
b. Experienced inpatient consult and floor management treatment and triage experience
c. Surgical Critical Care experience
d. Procedural minimum competency:
a. Central venous catheters (Internal Jugular, Subclavian, Femoral) with Ultrasound Assistance
b. Hemodialysis catheter placement (Internal Jugular, Subclavian, Femoral) with Ultrasound Assistance
c. Thoracostomy tube placement (traditional Argyle or Seldinger “Rocket” “ Wayne”)
e. Optimal additional procedural competency:
a. Thoracentesis
b. Paracentesis
c. Emergency surgical airway management
d. ATLS
Duties & Responsibilities
A. Performs comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations for any surgical patient at the request of Attending Surgeon B. Diagnoses and treats Surgical illnesses and injuries C. Orders and interprets laboratory and radiographic studies D. Educates and counsels patients on surgical procedures and post-operative care E. Performs out of operating room minor surgical procedures (including use of MSTA when appropriate) F. Performs First and Second Assist duties in surgery for all subspecialties G. Renders emergency care H. Facilitates patient referral to the appropriate physician or agency I. Prescribes medication in compliance with state and hospital guidelines J. Conducts daily hospital rounds when required K. Write orders and progress notes when required L. Orders appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests M. Evaluates and clarifies surgical clinical conditions and updates patients Attending Surgeon as appropriate N. Formulates and implements treatment and therapeutic plans for hospitalized patients
O. Handles discharge planning and dictates discharge summaries P. Meets good practice and standard of care practice for patient hand off

$15.00 - $500.00
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time.
