Job Summary

Performs duties related to supporting specified equipment within the Operating Room in collaboration with nursing and Biomed ensuring timely and accurate communication and follow up with all stakeholders. Supports and promotes communication among campuses to streamline processes and facilitate stewardship.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications:

  • Educational Requirements: High School Diploma or GED.

  • Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of OR experience.

  • Preferred Educational Requirements: Two (2) years in peri-operative equipment support or graduate of bio-technologist training program.

Job Specific and Unique Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Capable of troubleshooting specific surgical equipment as identified by Nurse Manager

  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, and equipment specific to those procedures as well as equipment specific to surgeons

  • Self motivated professional work ethic and attitude

  • Assists with orientation and training of new employees about specific surgical equipment as identified by the Nurse Manager/Educator

  • Assists Educator with evaluating new employees on their ability to learn and run equipment safely  

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as customer support skills

  • Knowledgeable in specific OR equipment including beds, attachment and positioning devices

  • Capable of troubleshooting some surgical equipment as identified by Nurse Manager

  • Strong analytical ability and interpersonal skills

  • Knowledgeable in endoscopic equipment 

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Maintains Surgical Services equipment, endoscopic equipment, and furniture in proper working order.  

  • Maintains endoscopy tower and equipment. 

  • Assist with room set up as needed including beds, positioning devices, and all equipment needed for cases. 

  • Immediately removes/tags equipment in need of repair or replacement from surgical environment. Places a work order with Biomed for equipment to be repaired or replaced. Communicates with clinical coordinator/manager.

  • Evaluates equipment to ensure it is in proper working order before it is returned to service.  

  • Maintains clear communication between Clinical Coordinators as well as charge nurse of equipment that is down, out of service or in need of repair for that particular service; ie neuro, ortho, urology, etc.

  • Maintains awareness of safety hazards and proper use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel or patients. 

  • Maintains an effective preventive maintenance system with documentation.

  • Properly documents repairs and adjustments through communication with the biomedical engineering department. Initiates all requests through work order documentation. Follows up with biomedical department to ensure timely return of equipment to OR.  

  • Follows up with and is in frequent communication with the biomedical department to ensure timely return and/or replacement of equipment to the OR.

  • Provides routine care, ensures cleanliness and maintenance scheduling of equipment.

  • Responds appropriately to special assignments and emergency/urgent requests.

  • Briefs supervisor on conditions of equipment and provides necessary follow-up.

  • Provides orientation for all new staff on basic surgical equipment, (beds, frames, bovies, microscopes, etc.) Provides in depth orientation for OR Assistants on specified equipment to prepare for needs during call coverage. 

  • Participates in capital budget preparation. Analyzing needs for next fiscal year in collaboration with manager to ensure equipment needs of unit are met. Liaison with vendors to receive information on new or replacement equipment.

  • Initiates documentation for request for Biomed/Plant Ops. Expedites parts acquisition per approval from Bio-Medical Supervisor in a cost effective manner. Works with Bio-med to facilitate proper and timely order and delivery of parts.

  • Serves as a department superuser for some OR equipment as assigned by nursing leadership. Documents troubleshooting procedures through publications and training sessions.

  • Maintains and updates manuals for some equipment utilized in operating room as identified by nurse manager and Biomed.

  • Assists in positioning of patients, follows safety guidelines and maintains patient privacy.

  • Interfaces with vendors to understand preventative maintenance requirements and training in collaboration with Nurse Manager/Educator.

  • Maintains storerooms of equipment and keeps organized. 

  • Functions in role of OR assistant as needed per department needs.  

  • Maintains availability to circulator to assist with difficult cases and/or in emergency situations. These duties may include obtaining blood products, transporting specimens, or appropriate duties as assigned by the RN.  

  • Assists in rapid turnover by thorough mopping of room and removal of soiled instruments, trash, and linen according to procedure. 

  • Maintains cast supplies, stock cast cart and cleaning cart after use.  

  • Maintains professional growth by attending in-services in the department and attending staff meetings. 

  • Provides clinical support for some equipment during surgical cases as directed by Nurse Manager.

  • Ensures adherence to regulatory standards and hospital policies in relation to proper and timely maintenance of equipment.

  • Reviews OR schedule 2 days ahead to identify and avoid equipment conflicts creating surgical delays.
