Overview of Position:

Responsible for collecting and submitting reliable data to the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). This is accomplished through high quality data compilations, documentation and entry into the. ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the hospital. Provides feedback of ACS NSQIP data to relevant groups/meetings and works closely with the members of the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects that may be identified.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1.    Data Collection and Reporting
2.    Identifies surgical patients for inclusion in the Program through the application of Program inclusion/ exclusion criteria and protocols.
3.    Collects preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems.
4.    Tracks down information through various sources such as medical records, accounts payable, direct patient contact, social security death index, etc.
5.    Demonstrates applicability of the methodology and the reliability of definitions utilized by reviewers within the program through Inter-Rater. Reliability (IRR) testing.
6.    Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process.
7.    Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the Program.
8.    Utilizes software applications for data collection and analysis.
9.    Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data into the program's database and meets the caseload accrual requirement protocol.
10.    Reviews weekly site accrual report on the database and responds to accrual report alerts.
11.    Attend relevant hospital/departmental committee meetings such as Surgical Care Review, Surgical Staff meetings, Infection Control, Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance.
12.    Meet monthly with on-site ACS NSQIP Surgeon Champion.
13.    Works Effectively with Patients, Families, and Staff
14.    Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Health Information Management and the Information Systems Departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program.
15.    Contacts patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications postoperatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed at the hospital.
16.    Participates in ACS NSQIP teleconferences
17.    Attends ACS NSQIP National Conference
 

QUALIFICATIONS
1.    Graduate of an accredited program for nursing education - BSN preferred.
2.    Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the State of Ohio.
3.    Minimum one year experience in hospital surgery department or surgery clinic. Clinical chart review and abstraction experience preferred.
4.    Ability to build relationships and gain alignment for clinical support and be able to articulate questions to receive an appropriate level of support from superiors and peers.
5.    Ability to interact with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner.
6.    Successfully complete the ACS NSQIP SCR Training/Certification Program within 6 months of hire.
7.    Computer and Internet experience required - familiarity and comfort with MS Office products is essential for success in this position (Word and Excel required; PowerPoint and Access- preferred).
8.    Database data entry and/or management experience preferred.
9.    Familiarity with Hospital Information and Documentation systems- Basic statistical knowledge preferred.
10.    Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred.
