Job Summary: The incumbent of this position is assigned to work in the radiology department, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) section, at the Durham VA Health Care Center under the direction of a radiologist. The Supervisory Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist reports directly to the Chief Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent supervises MRI technologists while working with radiologists, clinicians and clerical staff.

Major Duties:

  • a. Plans and coordinates work to be accomplished in the MRI suite. Schedules exams in a manner that optimizes scanner time while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate emergency patients who may need immediate emergency surgery, etc b. Confers with radiologist to determine requirement of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number, and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of MRI scans. Schedules patients for examinations. Advises radiologist or referring physician of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention. Reviews exam protocols and image quality of each MRI study before it is sent to PACS. Makes sure all scans are transmitted to PACS upon completion. c. Performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging exams per protocols. Performs reconstruction of MRI angiography studies when requested or when part of a standard procedure. d. Assists radiologist when performing MRI Guided Biopsies; sets up equipment; delivers specimen to the laboratory service; coordinates with other departments as necessary. e. Maintains ample supplies prior to all scheduled exams and procedures. Responsible for stocking and inventory of all MRI supplies and related materials. f. Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and 'sharps'; proper attire; hand washing practices; and continuing education. g. Works with the radiologist as a member of the radiographic team. Must assist and anticipate the needs of the radiologists in the performance of the exam. Must continuously be on the alert for the patient's condition, assessing for possible claustrophobia. The alertness of the individual is essential to prevent and recognize patient reactions and anticipate technique factor difficulties, etc. h. Prepares contrast materials that are used in MRI exams. improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient mortality and, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the contrast material usage is possessed by those who prepare it. In addition, must be continuously on the alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient. Is certified to insert IV needles for administration of contrast material when necessary. CPR certification is required and recertification in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines. i. Responsible for obtaining informed consent from patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible. Responsible for acquiring MRI screening records on all MRI patients prior to exam to assess for MRI contraindications and ensuring they are scanned into the patient's medical record. j. Continually reviews new developments in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Is continually on the alert to improve quality of exams utilizing the new technologies available. Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the full performance level and below, which may include support staff. The incumbent advises employees of the performance requirements of their positions, informs them of their progress in meeting the requirements, and prepares formal evaluations of employee performance. The incumbent conducts corrective interviews with employees, referring disciplinary problems to higher levels of management; resolves informal complaints of employees; and deals with union representatives as appropriate. Supervisory DRTs plan and direct programs at medical centers and/or satellite outpatient clinics and have full supervisory responsibility. Assignments at this level include but are not limited to: assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met; evaluating new products, equipment, and systems to make recommendations for improved operations; identifying educational or training needs; recommending final decisions on selections; evaluating performance and recommending disciplinary action when necessary. The incumbent has professional responsibility for planning and directing the DRTs activities and is responsible for extracting and analyzing data to provide reports in support of performance measures to senior management. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*) i. *Ability to organize work, set priorities, delegate tasks and responsibilities ii. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers iii. *Skill in assessing qualifications and abilities of current and prospective employees. iv. *Ability to consult with radiologist to develop standard and non-standard treatment/exam protocols. v. Ability to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. f. [Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist], GS-10 (1) Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. (2) Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the 11 incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
