Job Description

The Role

The Supplier Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring the quality of parts, processes, and vehicles from early builds through production. The QE/SQE works cross‑functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, Materials, and Operations to protect the customer and achieve safety, quality, throughput, and cost targets.

What You Will Do (Job Responsibilities)

Quality Problem Solving & Daily Support

  • Lead daily quality issue resolution using Red X, 7 Diamonds, and other structured methods to identify root cause, drive containment, and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Define clear problem statements, analyze data, and present recommendations to plant leadership, Engineering, and cross‑functional teams; prepare concise technical reports as needed.

Quality Standards, Control Plans & Inspections

  • Develop and maintain plant‑level quality standards, inspection methods, and procedures; ensure alignment with standardized work and control plans for critical operations.
  • Interpret drawings, GD&T, CMM/FARO/scan data, and measurement reports to guide build accuracy and supplier quality improvements.

Launch Support & Program Readiness

  • Support launch activities through virtual/physical builds, IRT/easel boards, quality walls, and D1–D4 issue tracking through closure and lessons learned.
  • Partner with Engineering and Production to evaluate new vehicles/powertrains, support GCA/CFI reviews, and disposition nonconforming components and sub‑assemblies.

Audits, Corrective Actions & Compliance

  • Plan, conduct, or participate in system and process audits internally and at suppliers; verify corrective action effectiveness and follow up on nonconformities.
  • Share lessons learned across programs and plants to prevent recurrence of design, process, or supplier issues.

Supplier Quality Management

  • Lead or support supplier issue resolution, including opening/maintaining SPPS/PRTS records, ensuring timely containment, and driving root cause and long‑term corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Supplier Quality and Purchasing on PPQP/PPAP deliverables, including validation of quality plans and control plans for launches and engineering changes.
  • Work directly with suppliers to develop inspection standards and gaging strategies for supplied components and assemblies.
  • Coordinate supplier onsite presence for containments, trial runs, and issue resolution; ensure required cost recovery documentation is completed.
  • Support and, where needed, lead supplier audits and performance reviews; escalate chronic or high‑risk suppliers through appropriate forums.

Collaboration, Communication & Results

  • Build strong relationships with plant teams, Engineering, Supplier Quality, Purchasing, and supplier partners; influence cross‑functional teams without direct authority.
  • Deliver on quality, timing, and launch‑readiness goals while balancing technical and business needs.
  • Prepare and present clear verbal and written updates, issue summaries, and technical documentation for leadership and external partners.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 3+ years of experience in Quality Engineering, Process Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or related role in a manufacturing environment (automotive preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with structured problem‑solving (e.g., Red X, 7 Diamonds, 5‑Why, FMEA, control plans) and data‑driven decision making.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, GD&T, measurement reports (e.g., CMM, FARO, scans), and other critical data for components and assemblies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within GM systems such as PRTS, SPPS, Teamcenter, EMS, ABAT, GDIS, GQTS, GSIP, and related tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and effectively with cross‑functional teams and suppliers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent technical experience.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Quality Engineering experience in launch and/or complex assembly operations.
  • Experience working with union‑represented employees and in high‑volume or pre‑production environments.
  • Supplier audit experience and familiarity with PPQP/PPAP, ISO/IATF requirements, and BIQ/GMS principles.
  • Manage multiple projects and issues simultaneously with broad scope and high degree of difficulty, exercising independent judgment with minimal supervision.
  • Balance technical solutions with business imperatives to achieve Direct Run, GCA/DRR, warranty, and customer metrics.
