Job Summary

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders are peer leaders who support students enrolled in historically difficult courses with high DFW (D, F, Withdrawal) rates. SI Leaders attend all class sessions, collaborate with the course instructor, and lead structured, regularly scheduled study sessions. The goal is to promote active learning, improve student understanding of course material, and increase persistence and success rates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend all assigned class sessions to model successful student behaviors and take lecture notes.

  • Plan and facilitate weekly SI sessions outside of class, using collaborative learning strategies.

  • Collaborate with course faculty to align SI session goals with lecture material and assignments.

  • Promote SI sessions to enrolled students, encouraging participation and engagement.

  • Maintain accurate attendance records of SI sessions for program tracking and assessment.

  • Incorporate active learning techniques such as group problem solving, discussion, and concept mapping.

  • Provide exam review sessions prior to midterms and finals.

  • Participate in ongoing training, professional development, and team meetings with ACE staff.

  • Submit weekly session reports and reflections to the Program Specialist.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current TAMIU students with 60 SCH or more at the time of appointment.

  • Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate and 3.0 for graduate student.

  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate and 3.0 graduate students.

  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience working with college/university students in an educational setting.

  • Supplemental Instruction experience in content area.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Ability to interact effectively, professionally, and tactfully with students, faculty, and other university personnel.

  • Ability to motivate students.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to arrange and keep a work schedule.

  • Strong academic knowledge in content area.

  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to prepare and facilitate workshops, presentations, and orientations to groups of students.

  • Ability to think critically and solve problems.

Other Requirements

  • Position requires keeping a work schedule of 19 hours per week.

  • Position requires face-to-face interactions on campus.

  • Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

  • Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.

  • Promptly complete all required training.

  • Submit time sheet biweekly.

  • Subject to funding and/or need.

Pay of Rate: 12.50/hour for up to 19 hours weekly
