Job Summary: This position is in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service affiliated with the Hampton VA Healthcare System. The clinical duties and responsibilities and administrative duties are carried out across various facilities including the Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC) main campus and Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) locations.

Major Duties:

  • Duties Include, but are not limited: Conducts a full range of audiological evaluations to determine the type and degree of hearing loss Determines patients' need for amplification, predicts and measures the effectiveness of amplification, and determines need for and type of rehabilitation and counseling of veterans with hearing loss and their families. Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures to address focused clinical needs and the overall services delivered and provided and complete documentation in accordance with the Joint Commission and service policies. Ability to use professional knowledge effectively and must possess initiative, tact, resourcefulness, and good judgement in exercising authority. Provides for the essential functions such as ensuring timely and appropriate consult management, supervise treatments, provides oversight of key clinical and training programs, including technical oversight of the Audiologists. CLINICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for identifying and evaluating individuals with auditory disorders that impact the reception and perception of speech and other acoustic signals. Administers the full range of behavioral and physiological tests such as those that assess auditory brainstem function, otoacoustic emissions, acoustic immittance, and all other testing to assist with the evaluation of the type and degree of hearing loss for adult patients of all ages. ADMINISTRATIVE Responsible for ensuring that work assignments of all members of the clinical team are carried out by performing a range of duties. These duties encompass 20% of the incumbent's time and are as follows: Manage assigned personnel ceiling, distributing personnel resources to achieve efficient and effective delivery of Audiology services across all sites of care; Initiates and monitors corrective action plans when efficiency and or effective delivery of care is reduced or when access is outside of policy. Qualifications: Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Doctor of Audiology (AUD) from an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) or Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) OR Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. Such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency: Audiologist must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining grade for GS-13 Supervisory Audiologist. Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level. Skill in determining nature, type, and severity of hearing/communication and vestibular disorders. Skill in counseling patients and family members regarding management of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional audiology to other health care professionals. Ability to independently apply professional contemporary audiologic treatments to the full range of patient populations. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the candidate must demonstrate the following professional KSAs identified below. Skill in conflict resolution to facilitate positive working relationships between employees, team leaders, and managers. Skill in applying evidence-based practices in a professional area. Ability to balance responsibilities, set priorities, and delegate tasks to meet multiple deadlines. Ability to analyze data to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the section. Physical Requirements: Able to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes: heavy lifting, 50 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-49 pounds, pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending, pushing, pulling, an twisting; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability.
