Supervisor, Horticulture

Under the direction of the Manager, Horticulture, the Supervisor, Horticulture provides daily leadership across horticulture team members and exterior horticultural teams, including Groundskeeping, Landscape, and Exterior Maintenance. This role ensures the resort’s exterior environment remains clean, safe, visually exceptional, and aligned with departmental standards and expectations. Assigns work, manages routes, coordinates with vendors, oversees irrigation checks, ensures equipment readiness, maintains safe work practices, and leads team coaching, development, and corrective action efforts. This position is accountable for the consistent delivery of high-quality grounds and landscape operations while driving daily workflow efficiency, quality, and communication.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Supervises, directs, and evaluates the work of horticulture team members across Groundskeeping, Landscape, and Exterior Maintenance. Ensures adherence to proper horticultural practices, safety standards, equipment use, work quality, and service expectations.
2.    Conducts daily and weekly inspections of landscaped areas, hardscape, grounds routes, and exterior zones. Ensures timely completion of cleaning, landscaping, irrigation checks, and maintenance tasks. Identifies deficiencies and assigns corrective actions immediately.
3.    Provides structured training in horticultural techniques, safety protocols, and landscape standards. Leads coaching, counseling, documentation of performance issues, and corrective action processes in accordance with enterprise policies. Supports the development of team skills and behaviors.
4.    Ensures the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of horticulture equipment, tools, vehicles, and materials. Equipment Oversight, Inventory Management, and Area-of-Responsibility Assignments. Oversees equipment readiness, inventory accuracy, and assigned Area-of-Responsibility programs.
5.    Coordinates with vendors supporting horticulture operations, including landscaping services, irrigation specialists, pest control partners, equipment vendors, and seasonal décor contractors. Ensure clear communication, timely follow-up, verification of work quality, and adherence to established standards. Vendor Coordination and Operational Communication.
6.    Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.

 EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  

  • Minimum of one (1) year of progress experience in horticulture, exterior maintenance, seasonal decor, groundskeeping, floral or previous casino experience required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience leading, supervising, or managing teams preferred.  

  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

  • Demonstrated ability to direct, train, and develop staff, coordinate complex grounds and horticultural operations, and uphold quality and safety standards.

  • Grounds maintenance practices, including plant care, irrigation, hardscape upkeep and waste management

  • Horticultural principles relating to plant care, florals and event décor

  • Safety and regulatory standards related to grounds operations

  • Scheduling methods, modern office and communication equipment and tool usage

  • Lead, motivate and develop diverse teams across multiple work groups and shifts

  • Exercise sound judgement and decision making in operational situations

  • Manage time and prioritize multiple responsibilities under shifting demands

  • Collaborate cross departmentally and work independently with minimal supervision

  • Leadership, accountability and integrity in team and project management

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS

  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.

  • Certified Arborist, Pesticide Applicator License, or Landscape Technician Certificate. Project Management credential (CAPM, Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, or equivalent) preferred

  • Authorized Driver: Role requires operation or driving of Tribe-owned vehicles or driving patron vehicles. A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the insurance carrier is required.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORKING CONDITIONS – ENVIRONMENT

  • Primary work environment is outdoors.

  • Work requires travel to attend meetings, trade shows, and conferences.

  • Incumbents may be required to work evening, weekend and holiday shifts.

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.

  • Strength sufficient to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and/or move up to 40 pounds occasionally.

  • Sedentary work: involves sitting some of the time. May operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

  • Physical activities that apply to the essential functions of the position are balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

  • Hearing sufficient to hear conversational levels in person, via videoconference and over the telephone.

  • Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in person, in front of groups, in meetings, via videoconference and over the telephone.

  • Visual acuity that meets the requirements of the position: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading and visual inspection of employees, visitors or facility.

  • Mobility sufficient to safely move in an office environment, walk, stoop, bend and kneel, and enter, exit and operate a motor vehicle in the course of travel to promotional events, meetings, conferences, trade shows and San Manuel properties.

  • Endurance sufficient to sit, walk and stand for extended periods, and maintain efficiency throughout the entire work shift and during extended work hours.

  • The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including secondhand smoke.
