This position is responsible for supervising a subset of the accounting operations for a specific Markel reporting segment and is part of the Close, Control and Reporting (CCR) department within Markel’s finance group (Finance). CCR is responsible for the controls and processes around reporting Markel’s division and segment results. This position works closely with management to oversee processes and resources and to provide strategic support to Finance leadership team.

Duties and accountabilities

  • Review journal entries and complex account reconciliations including identification and remediation of all issues in compliance with audit requirements.

  • Oversee assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing and reporting processes.

  • Assume primary responsibility for monthly system close and processes and serve as accounting to IT liaison for responsible IT systems.

  • Oversee a team focused on cash disbursements through accounts payable and a banking interface that generates wires and ACHs both foreign and domestic

  • Assist in the internal and external audit process

  • Assist with the compilation and/or review of insurance company financial statements and ensure compliance with statutory guidance and regulatory deadlines.

  • Continually challenge staff by providing guidance, mentoring and training for the purpose of achieving functional goals and objectives

  • Work closely with other functional areas (i.e., business support, financial reporting, corporate accounting, reinsurance administration, billing & collections, actuarial, statutory reporting, human resources, disbursements, treasury and program accounting) and business management to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals

  • Proactively identify and champion process improvements and ensure teams are continually working to improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting processes

  • Collaborate with teammates and initiate ideas with management to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or 5+ years of work experience in an Accounting role

Work Experience/Skill Set

  • 4+ years of accounting experience preferred

  • 2+ years supervising a team preferred

  • Experience in the insurance industry preferred

  • Experience with accounts payable and/or banking transactions including foreign and domestic wires and ACH’s preferred

  • Experience with balance sheet reconciliations, particularly bank reconciliations preferred

  • Strong leadership, people management skills and ability to work in a team environment

  • High degree of proficiency within Excel

  • Strong research, analytical and problem solving skills

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills

  • High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change and deliverable requests

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
