About the Role:
Reporting to the Faculty Services Manager, the Supervisor, Academic Advising is responsible for leading undergraduate academic advising within the Faculty of Education. The position delivers high‑quality, student‑centred advising services, supports student success and progression, and ensures equitable and consistent advising practices across programs. Additionally, the Faculty Services Manager supervises the advising staff, serves as the escalation point for complex advising issues, and collaborates with faculty, central units, and student services to ensure effective and coordinated academic advising.
The Supervisor, Academic Advising will:
- Provide comprehensive academic advising to prospective and in‑progress students across the Bachelor of Educational Studies, Concurrent Teacher Education, Consecutive Teacher Education, Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, and Adult Education programs;
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Academic Advisors when complex or sensitive advising matters are escalated, providing guidance, resolution, and consistency in advising practices;
- Deliver advising services that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the diverse backgrounds, lived experiences, and well‑being needs of students;
- Promote student learning and development by helping students to develop critical thinking skills, make informed decisions, and connect their academics to their personal and professional goals;
- Develop and facilitate workshops on student success strategies during key transition points that holistically and proactively support their academic, social and professional development;
- Maintain, monitor and assess student records for degree requirements, program development and adjudications;
- Manage the daily operations of the Academic Advising Office, including training, mentoring, and supervising Academic Advising staff;
- Ensure the effective delivery and consistent application of policies and procedures related to student recruitment, advising, and retention, aligned with the University’s strategic priorities;
- Prepare and analyze reports for the Faculty Service Manager, providing data‑informed insights on student recruitment, progression, and retention trends;
- Administer the operating budget for the Academic Advising Office as allocated by the Dean of Education;
- Collaborate across departments to ensure a consistent and integrated advising experience for students;
- Administer academic processes such as terminations, substitutions, adjudications, transfers, Letters of Permission (LOPs), graduation audits, registrations, and monitoring of student progression.
Please note this position may be required to participate in events and activities outside of regular business hours.
Key Skills and Experience:
- Undergraduate Degree in a relevant discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered;
- Previous academic advising experience and knowledge of teaching and education theory and practice;
- Knowledge of Brock University programs and systems, as well as local education systems;
- Solid computer competency including keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications and web maintenance, social media, and internet search engines;
- Excellent understanding of academic advising principles and best practices;
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records, including financial record keeping;
- Understanding of FIPPA with respect to access to confidential information and maintaining student privacy;
- Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including editing and proofreading;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with sound judgment, discretion, and respect for confidentiality;
- Well‑developed presentation, public relations, and marketing capabilities;
- Proven supervisory skills, with the ability to mentor and coach staff;
- Ability to set priorities and meet planning deadlines;
- Strong planning and organizational skills to support special projects;
- Flexible, adaptable, and energetic, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic work environment.
Preferred or Asset Skills:
- Academic advising experience, in a university environment; and
- Understanding of the programs within the Faculty of Education.
Salary and Total Rewards:
- Job Grade L, Salary Scale ($66,817-$108,353);
- Target Hiring Range: $66,817- $72,000*
