Job Description:

The Division of Youth and Family is offering a paid summer Peer Leader Internship with Trails and Natural Lands. This opportunity is designed for young adults ages 19–25 who are interested in gaining hands-on outdoor work experience while developing leadership skills. Peer Leaders will work alongside a team of interns completing trail maintenance and environmental projects, while also supporting and guiding a small group of youth participants.

About the Internship:


This is a paid, hands-on outdoor internship where participants will work with Trails and Natural Lands on projects such as clearing debris, maintaining trails, and supporting environmental conservation efforts. Interns will work closely with site leads and staff to learn job skills, safety practices, and expectations related to outdoor and environmental work. A small number of interns (ages 19–25) will be selected as Peer Leaders. Peer Leaders will complete the same work as the team while also helping guide a group of approximately 4 youth interns (16-18), modeling expectations, supporting engagement, and assisting with supervision alongside staff. This is a temporary summer internship, not a permanent position. Program Dates: June 1 – July 31, 2026. Schedule: Monday 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.; Tuesday–Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Fridays off. Hours: Approximately 27 hours per week.

Pay Rate: $19.00/hour.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in hands-on outdoor work, including trail maintenance, debris removal, and environmental projects.

  • Work alongside Trails and Natural Lands staff to learn job skills, safety practices, and daily operations.

  • Work alongside a team of interns to complete daily tasks and assigned projects.

  • Support and guide a small group of youth interns (approximately 4 participants).

  • Model professionalism, accountability, and positive work habits.

  • Assist with maintaining a safe, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.

  • Support youth engagement, participation, and problem-solving during work activities.

  • Communicate effectively with staff, peers, and supervisors.

  • Demonstrate leadership, initiative, and reliability throughout the program.

  • Participate in program orientation and any required trainings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 19–25 years old at the start of the program.

  • Must be able to commit to the full program dates (June 1 – July 31, 2026).

  • Interest in working outdoors and participating in physical labor.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and support peers.

  • Strong communication skills and willingness to take on a leadership role.

  • Experience working with youth or in leadership roles is preferred but not required.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Requires physical activity including standing, walking, lifting, and manual labor for extended periods.

  • May involve uneven terrain and exposure to environmental elements.
