36Position Summary:
The Mechanic Shop Assistant is an entry-level role for individuals beginning a career in vehicle and equipment maintenance. This position offers hands-on exposure to a professional fleet shop environment while supporting experienced technicians with basic, non‑hazardous tasks. Under direct supervision, the Mechanic Shop Assistant assists with shop organization, parts handling, routine inspections, and light maintenance activities.
The role emphasizes safety, reliability, and a strong willingness to learn. The Mechanic Shop Assistant will develop foundational mechanical skills and gain an understanding of day‑to‑day fleet operations. All duties are assigned in alignment with applicable youth labor laws, with a focus on training, observation, and safe work practices.
Schedule:
The typical schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday, 6:30am - 4:00pm. However, flexibility may be offered based on employee availability, departmental staffing needs, and operational requirements to ensure effective service delivery.
Examples of Work Performed:

Shop Organization & Housekeeping:
• Clean and organize tool bays, work areas, and shop equipment.
• Restock shop supplies and maintain orderly storage areas.
• Label, sort, and organize parts inventory.
• Sweep floors and perform routine shop upkeep to maintain a safe, clean work environment.
Technician Support (Non‑Hazardous Assistance):
• Hand tools, parts, and supplies to technicians as requested.
• Hold lights, components, or panels to assist during non‑hazardous repair tasks.
• Assist with simple, supervised parts removal that is permitted under youth labor regulations.
• Observe inspections and help with basic inspection preparations.
Light Vehicle Service Tasks:
• Check and top off basic fluids under supervision.
• Perform tire‑pressure checks.
• Clean vehicle interiors and exteriors.
• Install simple items such as license plates, decals, or other non‑hazardous accessories.
Basic Administrative & Recordkeeping Support:
• Enter basic service information into approved software systems.
• Assist with maintaining logs related to shop activities and routine services.
Training, Learning & Observation:
• Shadow experienced technicians during repairs to gain exposure to professional work practices.
• Observe diagnostic procedures and learn how technicians identify mechanical issues.
• Participate in safety briefings, shop orientation, and tool‑use training sessions.
• Learn proper tool identification, handling, and fundamental shop procedures.
Qualifications:
• Must be at least 16 years of age
• Computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• Basic automotive and equipment components such as fluids, filters, belts, and common hand tools.
• General shop practices, safe tool use, and proper equipment handling.
• Fundamental safety principles, including PPE use, hazard awareness, and safe lifting techniques.
• Basic record‑keeping concepts related to inspections, parts handling, and work documentation.
Skills in:
• Following written and verbal instructions accurately and consistently.
• Using hand tools and basic shop equipment under supervision.
• Communicating clearly with technicians, supervisors, and coworkers.
• Demonstrating reliability, punctuality, and positive workplace behaviors.
Ability to:
• Learn and apply new mechanical concepts through hands‑on training.
• Work safely around vehicles, equipment, and shop operations.
• Ask questions, seek clarification, and retain information during training activities.
• Work cooperatively in a team environment and accept constructive feedback.
• Follow all applicable youth labor laws, safety requirements, and departmental procedures.
Compensation:
$15.00 per hour. This seasonal position is not eligible for any employee benefits.
Physical Requirements:
High Physical Requirements: Job requires significant physical exertion, with tasks that involve more active movement. This job may include standing for long periods, lifting objects up to 50 pounds, or engaging in manual labor.
