Summer Internship

Sweden, Fagersta Full time

Are you passionate about materials science and eager to apply your knowledge in a real-world setting? Join our innovative team at Seco Tools in Fagersta this summer and work on meaningful R&D projects that shape the future of advanced materials.

What we offer

  • A paid internship in a global company with a strong focus on innovation
  • Hands-on experience with advanced equipment and characterization methods
  • Professional development in microscopy, image analysis, and technical reporting
  • Mentorship and support from skilled researchers throughout the project

Background and scope of the project

This project aims to investigate the microstructural properties of cemented carbide materials. We seek to understand the relationship between microstructure and material properties, to help us develop materials with enhanced performance for various applications.

Cemented carbides are composite materials, consisting of a hard ceramic phase, traditionally tungsten carbide, and a ductile metallic binder phase, most often cobalt. These are manufactured through a powder metallurgy processing route, which includes wet milling, spray drying, compaction, and sintering. Cemented carbide has an attractive combination of properties, including high hardness and toughness.

What you’ll do

Working independently in our modern R&D facilities, you will carry out systematic material characterization using advanced techniques. Your tasks will include:

  • Preparing material samples for microscopic analysis.
  • Examining the samples with microscopes.
  • Performing detailed image analysis to quantify microstructural phases.
  • Analyzing the results to identify key microstructural features.
  • Summarizing findings and writing clear technical reports.

Duration: Approximately 9 weeks, starting June 15th and ending August 14th, 2026. Exact dates and length are flexible and can be adjusted in discussion with the selected candidate.

Location: Fagersta

Who you are

You are a motivated master’s student in Materials Science, Material Chemistry, Physics, or a related field. Experience with laboratory work – such as sample preparation or microscopy – is an advantage, but not a requirement.

You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, can work independently and in a team, and communicate effectively in English.
