Your Role  
 
As a member of the Gensler Research Institute, the GIS Intern will work on the City Index team, which includes designers, architects, planners, economists and technologists, to generate new insights and knowledge that extends beyond a single building to communities, neighborhoods, and cities. You will be part of a major strategic initiative in shaping the future of cities. 
 
What You Will Do 

  • Provide GIS and research-related assistance and support to the City Index team

  • Analyze and visualize various GIS datasets (open and proprietary) for US cities

  • Create maps and automate projects utilizing ESRI products, displaying geospatial data, including demographic profiles, economic data, social media data, and survey response data 

  • Compile economic, demographic, building/property, transit data from a variety of sources  

  • Support the Gensler Research Institute in the production of basic mapping content for research analyses, presentations, and publications 

Your Qualifications 

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with studies in geography, GIS, urban studies, urban planning, or related 

  • Understanding of cities and awareness of major issues that impact cities 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team 

  • High-level analytical and problem-solving skills and strategic-thinking capability 

  • Passion for urban data, cities, and the issues facing cities 

  • Motivated, proactive, and resourceful 

  • 1-2 years professional and/or academic experience managing and analyzing GIS data 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite 

  • Must have high proficiency in ArcGIS 

  • High proficiency in Python and model builder to automate tasks preferred 

  • Emphasis on Google Earth/Maps 

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite Products- Fireworks, Photoshop preferred 

  • Working knowledge of KML, HTML, SQL, R preferred 

Program Details

  • Duration: 10–12 weeks (Summer 2026)

  • Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week)

  • Location: New York City - In-person; this is not a remote position.

  • This is a paid internship. A competitive hourly stipend will be provided between $23-25/hour
