Job Description:

Aerovel (the Airbus Helicopters Flexrotor Program) is looking for Summer Interns to join our Engineering Team based in Bingen, WA.

Working closely with experienced engineers, you will be exposed to key concepts in UAV operation. Internship projects are designed to be achievable within 6 to 12 weeks and may support either development or support functions, depending on business needs.

The Airbus Helicopters Flexrotor Program offers one of the most advanced small tactical unmanned aerial systems (STUAS) with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). It can be used day or night by US and allied forces for a diverse range of intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) on land and at sea.

Your Challenges:

Primary Responsibilities: 

Engineering Support: 100% 

Will vary based on the project available at the time, but almost always involve: 

  • Introduction to Basic Flexrotor operation and design

  • Engineering department roles and activities

  • Assigned project goals

  • Develop project schedule (phases / tasks list, milestones).

  • Create a project execution report (content to be adjusted based on target audience).

  • Perform periodic reviews with a direct supervisor.

  • Brief project execution / lessons learned to the Department Manager upon project completion. 

Additional Responsibilities:  

  • Other duties as assigned

For Mechanical/Electrical:      

  • Research technical information for feasibility / obsolescence evaluation 

  • Perform maintenance, cataloging, or classification of existing technical data 

  • Create CAD models from legacy data or creating new CAD data 

  • Assist in  Prototyping activities 

  • The functional definition / analysis of an intended design.

  • The accomplishment of engineering airframe designs / analysis (and associated reports).

  • Repairs or modifications development programs requiring any type of mechanical or airframe analysis, detail design or testing (and associated reports).

  • Project execution performance analysis / improvement.

  • Data manipulation and analysis (and associated reports).

  • Conduct hands-on shop floor, lab and bench testing, including gathering measurements, troubleshooting hardware/software interfaces, and processing test data into summary reports. 

For Flight Control and Software:      

  • Research software tools, flight control code, or algorithms for feasibility / performance evaluation 

  • Perform updates, debugging, or documentation of existing embedded software and flight scripts 

  • Create diagnostic tools (using Python, C++, or MATLAB) from past projects or creating new software features 

  • Assist in software prototyping and software-in-the-loop (SIL), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing activities 

  • the basic definition / software architecture analysis of an intended drone design 

  • the accomplishment of coding flight control updates / mapping algorithm flows (and associated reports) 

  • software integration or feature development requiring basic code analysis, algorithm tuning, or bench testing (and associated reports) 

  • project tracking / workflow improvement 

  • flight test data processing, scripting, and analysis (and associated reports) 

  • Conduct hands-on shop floor lab and bench testing, including gathering measurements, troubleshooting hardware/software interfaces, and processing test data into summary reports. 

Your Boarding Pass:

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Aeronautical, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Sciences from an accredited college/university 

  • Demonstrated interest in software, hardware, electrical, mechanical, or computer systems through coursework, personal projects or previous internships.   

  • Must be a US Person under ITAR definition (U.S. Citizen, green card holder or person covered under our existing ITAR license) 

  • For Mechanical/Electrical: Basic knowledge of 2D or 3D mechanical or structural, OR electrical design requirements 

  • For Flight Controls & Software: Basic coding of data analysis or logical processing functions 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form in English  

  • For Mechanical/Electrical: The ability to utilize CAD tools and technical data to research, design, and analyze mechanical and electrical components in support of airframe prototyping, functional definition, and structural modifications. 

  • For Flight Controls & Software: The ability to research, develop, and debug embedded flight control software and diagnostic tools using languages like Python, C++, or MATLAB, to support algorithm tuning, software architecture design, and system integration through simulated and hardware-in-the-loop testing. 

Preferred:

  • Already local to the Portland, OR metro/Columbia River Gorge area or local to the area for the summer

  • For Mechanical/Electrical: Minimum of 1 years’ experience in 2D or 3D design of detail parts, electrical diagrams, functional diagrams, assemblies and/or installations. 

  • For FC & SW: Minimum of 1 year of experience (including coursework or academic projects) in designing software components, logic flowcharts, functional block diagrams, or system architectures. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Onsite: 100% - Daily

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings daily

  • Hearing: able to hear to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds including safety warnings or alarms daily

  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications daily

  • Equipment Operation: able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment daily

  • Carrying: able to carry documents, drawings, electronic equipment up to 10lbs daily

  • Lifting: able to lift documents, drawings, electronic equipment up to 10lbs daily

  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture occasionally

  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on computer daily

  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving occasionally

  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices daily

  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice rarely

  • Walking: able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces daily

  • Personal Protective Equipment required: Steel-toed shoes are required for all shop floor visits, appropriate hearing/eye protection may also be required when visiting the shop floor.

Hourly Range:

Pay range based on the required profile: $25.50 - $35.50/hour.  Actual minimum and maximum may vary based on geographic differential. Individual pay is based on skills, experience, and other relevant factors. This position offers the following benefits: Paid time off including paid holidays.
