Job Description:

Overview

To perform general office work in designated department or area of assignment within the City of Sarasota's Public Works Department. The Part-Time Intern will support Inspection of SWFWMD Permitted City Stormwater Treatment Systems; Environmental Compliance.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct field inspections of permitted stormwater treatment systems and coordinate with Sarasota County Field Services staff to address noncompliance issues and maintain tracking spreadsheet.

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret permitted documents to successfully set up an inspection.

  • Conduct substantial completion walkthrough inspections for City Capital Projects that include new or revised stormwater infrastructure and identify deficiencies and needed corrections.

  • Conduct joint field inspections with regulatory agencies(e.g., Southwest Florida Water Management District, US Army Corp of Engineers) to coordinate and streamline permit compliance efforts.

  • Prepare recertification packet for professional engineer’s review and approval.

  • Investigate complaints and inspect sources of pollution.

  • Conduct field inspections to confirm native habitat types and the presence of listed species.

  • Review design plans (including permit applications and contracts) and provide comments and recommendations regarding environmental issues.•Interpret environmental rules and regulations and provide cost-effective recommendations on compliance with environmental rules and regulations at the Federal, State and local levels.

  • Verify contractors are utilizing best management practices and complying with local environmental ordinances.

  • Participates in departmental planning sessions for both day-to-day and special projects.

  • Works independently, as assigned, under the general or specific guidelines as to Department policy and practice.

Minimum Qualifications

In the process of receiving a Degree (Bachelors or Masters) from an accredited program in one of the following majors:
•Biological or Physical Sciences
•Environmental Engineering
•Civil Engineering
•Or Other closely related field
•Candidates with degrees in any of the majors mentioned are encouraged to apply.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, superiors, officials of the City, and the general public.

Responsibility

Responsible to the assigned Department Head, but may operate under the direction of any number of others in the department charged by the Department Head with the responsibility of assisting in training/educational activities. The Director, Human Resources is responsible to be knowledgeable about the requirements of the internship program that the department is involved in order to make sure that the City appropriately comply. Interns that are not paid by the department to which the intern is assigned will have an overall responsibility to the Director, Human Resources or designee. No Supervision Exercised.

Physical Requirements

This is sedentary work requiring limited physical effort. Position requires visual acuity for reviewing, checking, preparing, and maintaining written and computer files. Incumbent is required to have sufficient hearing to accurately perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity to operate standard office, date entry, and word processing equipment is required.
