What You Will Do
High-Density Converter Design: Develop and optimize power electronics topologies (e.g., resonant converters, multi-level stages) with a focus on extreme miniaturization and maximizing power density.
Advanced Magnetic Modeling: Design and characterize high-frequency magnetic components, including planar, integrated, or novel configurations, to minimize volume and losses.
Multi-Physics Simulation: Perform comprehensive modeling (electromagnetic, thermal, and dielectric) using finite element analysis (FEA) tools to predict performance and ensure reliability in compact designs.
Insulation Coordination: Analyze and implement strategies to ensure dielectric integrity and compliance with safety standards in high-voltage, high-density systems.
Hardware Prototyping: Lead the full hardware development process, including PCB layout, magnetic component fabrication, and complete converter assembly.
Experimental Validation: Perform laboratory testing to evaluate efficiency, thermal management, and insulation performance under high-frequency operation.
Technical Communication: Document research findings through technical reports and contribute to peer-reviewed publications or internal presentations.
What You Will Learn
Integrated Electric Systems: Understand system-level trade-offs for aerospace applications, including the interaction between power electronics, motors, and distribution grids.
High-Frequency Magnetic Optimization: Master advanced techniques for magnetic design, including loss mitigation (e.g., skin and proximity effects) and optimal flux distribution.
Applied Dielectric Engineering: Develop expertise in insulation coordination and electric field stress management for miniaturized high-voltage hardware.
Industrial R&D Workflow: Gain experience transitioning from fundamental research to applied technology in a multidisciplinary aerospace and defense setting.
Qualifications You Must Have
Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, with a graduation date no earlier than December 2026.
At least 1 year of doctoral-level research experience in power electronics, electromagnetic modeling, or high-frequency magnetic design.
Proficiency in electromagnetic FEA tools (e.g., Ansys Maxwell, FEMM, COMSOL) and circuit simulation tools (e.g., PLECS, LTspice, MATLAB/Simulink).
Strong knowledge of electromagnetics, control theory, and semiconductor physics as applied to power conversion.
Qualifications We Prefer
Hands-on experience with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, KiCAD) and building/testing power electronic hardware (>1kW).
A proven track record of contributions to top-tier venues such as IEEE TPEL, TIE, APEC, or ECCE.
Familiarity with high-frequency characterization equipment, including impedance analyzers and partial discharge test setups.
