Subsurface Geologist – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), is currently recruiting for a Subsurface Geologist to join a talented group of geoscientists within the Subsurface Geology team. As a Subsurface Geologist, you will be a key contributor to AGS projects, and may be called upon to provide subject matter expertise to other branches across the AER.
This position applies stratigraphic and sedimentological expertise across a diverse range of depositional and petroleum systems, both conventional and unconventional, with a primary focus on the Cretaceous interval of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). The role requires strong experience in oil sands geology, while also having broad basin-wide experience.
The Subsurface Geologist will contribute to the development of high-quality geoscience products that support AGS’s operational plan and energy regulation across the province. The role requires working collaboratively with a positive, team-oriented mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement, while exercising strong professional judgment and independence to solve complex geological challenges.
What your day-to-day will look like:
Apply sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy principles, along with a comprehensive understanding of subsurface geology in the WSCB, to collect, analyze, validate, interpret, and integrate multi-source data using a variety of software to support project objectives.
Interpret stratigraphy, structure, and depositional environments across Paleozoic and Mesozoic formations, with a primary focus on Cretaceous siliciclastic systems, using integrated datasets (e.g., core, well logs), and conduct petrophysical analysis to evaluate and map key rock and fluid properties (lithology, shale volume, porosity, permeability, water saturation) at local and regional scales, providing insights into geological history and subsurface characteristics.
Perform subsurface characterization to support resource appraisal, including developing stratigraphic and structural frameworks, interpreting facies and depositional models, calibrating core-to-log data, and generating geological maps, cross sections, and supporting 3D modelling initiatives.
Provide subsurface geological support and expertise to other AER branches by participating in AER projects and responding to requests
Deliver results through the publication of technical reports, maps, digital information products, and peer-reviewed literature.
What we’re looking for in you:
Master’s Degree in geoscience.
5-7 years of relevant industry, academia or government geoscience experience.
Eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist with APEGA is required.
Strong working knowledge of Alberta’s subsurface geology, with broad experience across diverse depositional systems, lithologies, and both conventional and unconventional petroleum systems.
Experience in siliciclastic systems (oil sands) is required.
Proficiency in petrophysical analysis (e.g., Vsh, porosity, permeability, water saturation).
Experience in subsurface characterization and resource appraisal.
Proficiency in geological software (e.g., Kingdom), data analysis tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro), and familiarity with geological modeling techniques (e.g., Petrel).
Ability to conduct core logging in a lead or supporting role with limited direction.
Demonstrated analytical, research and presentation skills combined with the ability to apply creative thinking to resolve complex issues.
Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate complex geoscience concepts, practices, or approaches to stakeholders.
Collaborative team player who values relationship-building and knowledge sharing.
