Scope of Position

The Ohio State University is committed to enhancing the quality of care provided to patients.  The Student Intern will assist the Clinical Epidemiology Department in surveillance activities, data collection and quality improvement initiatives for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC). During the  internship the student will be educated in the following subjects to prepare for future career in infection prevention. The internship will conclude with the student given the opportunity to sit for the Associate – Infection Prevention and Control (a-IPC) certification through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC).

Position Summary  

Under the direction of the Lead Education IP and IP Supervisor, provides data and quality improvement support to facilitate the reduction of healthcare acquired infections, quality care and patient safety. Responsibilities may include querying OSUWMC databases, data analysis, auditing, water culture collection, generation of presentation materials and facilitation support of meetings. Goal is to orient the student and give them a comprehensive understanding of the Infection Preventionist role in the healthcare setting. Will maintain strict confidentiality of all data and information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Graduate, enrolled in higher-level education course(s)
  • On Going: Current student status. Meet mandatory education and health surveillance requirements.
  • Demonstrate competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions
