About Student Health & Wellness:
Student Health & Wellness (SHW) supports the well‑being, academic success, and personal growth of all students through services including Care & Support Services (CASS), Disability Services (SDAC), Medical Services, Mental Health Services (CAPS), and Well‑Being Services. The SHW building also provides reservable spaces and common areas that serve the University community.
Position Overview:
Event Leads perform all duties of Event Assistants plus enhanced responsibilities in supervision, decision‑making, training, and facility coordination. Event Leads oversee building operations and events, manage facility needs, and act as representatives of both SHW and the University of Virginia.
Leadership & Staff Supervision:
- Serve as the on‑site supervisor for SHW events and daily operations.
- Positively influence student staff and foster a professional team environment.
- Provide direction, support, and coaching to student staff.
- Assist with training, onboarding, and development of new staff.
- Facilitate and oversee the Information/Welcome Desk.
- Support team scheduling and assist with shift assignments and coverage.
- Initiate and delegate projects to support operations.
- Prepare written reports and detailed entries in the SHW Shift Summary.
Event & Facility Operations:
- Oversee room setups and ensure event specifications are met.
- Articulate and enforce building and employee policies and procedures.
- Monitor building activity and address issues promptly.
- Troubleshoot A/V or event‑related issues and guide staff through solutions.
- Conduct building checks and report safety/maintenance concerns.
- Coordinate maintenance of the facility and equipment.
- Support evening, weekend, outdoor, and late‑night events.
- Ensure proper storage and inventory of equipment.
- Perform cleaning and general upkeep as needed.
- Open and/or close the facility as scheduled.
- Assist with evacuations during drills, alarms, and emergencies.
- Stay knowledgeable about updated policies and building procedures.
Work Schedule & Commitment:
- 10–20 hours per week.
- Evening and weekend shifts required.
- Mandatory participation in staff trainings and development sessions.
- Required fire safety training and emergency procedure participation.
- Summer availability opportunities.
Requirements:
- Ability to perform moderately heavy physical tasks (lifting/moving equipment.)
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and support peers.
- Strong communication, professionalism, and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred:
- Prior SHW or event‑operations experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
