Job Description:
Length of term: 4 months (May-August 2026)
Hybrid/Remote: This co-op opportunity is voluntarily in person, remote or hybrid. If you decide remote or hybrid, you will be required to work within the province. Remote work outside of the province will not be a possibility.
The Canadian & U.S. Internal Controls team, led by the Director, Financial Controls, provides an oversight and consolidation role for all Canadian and U.S. Business Units (BU’s) with respect to Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICFR), standard accounting control functions, select risk and compliance activities and acts as a consultant on various financial control and risk related matters.
Reporting to the Manager, U.S. Financial Controls, the Accounting Analyst Co-op is responsible for assisting BU’s to ensure compliance with the Sarbanes - Oxley Act (SOX) and Canadian Investor Confidence rules. In this role, the Accounting Analyst Co-op will gain exposure to various areas within the U.S. business, ranging from Insurance Operations (premiums, claims and commissions processing) to Central Finance, among others.
Qualifications
Pursuing a degree in Accounting or related discipline, with the intention to obtain a CPA designation.
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)
Strong organizational skills and commitment to meeting reporting and control deadlines.
Ability to work independently to effectively support the team.
Ability to work remotely as team members are located in both Canada and the U.S.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required as this position has direct contact with numerous departments within and outside the company.
Ability and willingness to learn new software applications quickly. Workiva, an online platform, is used for all SOX testing/documentation.
What will you do?
Working in a continuous improvement environment, assist in ensuring that Sun Life Financial (SLF) is in compliance with Sarbanes - Oxley Act and Canadian Investor Confidence rules as follows:
Attend internal control walkthrough meetings with relevant individuals from each business unit and the external auditors.
Design, execute and perform detailed testing of internal controls in accordance with professional audit standards, and within established deadlines.
Evaluate internal controls, propose enhancements to controls and investigate the cause of internal control weaknesses.
Perform analysis and needed remediation testing around identified control deficiencies.
Assist the Manager, U.S. Financial Controls in keeping track of ICFR deliverables to the external auditors and ensure timely delivery.
Other responsibilities and projects as required.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted for. The Base Pay which you will be considered for will vary depending on the Campus program you are selected for.
