Structural Engineer I (Future Opportunity)

About the Role
Vanderlande’s Distribution Engineering Department is responsible for designing, specifying, and commissioning Material Handling Systems, Warehouse Automation, and Parcel Sortation systems across North America. As a Structural Engineer I, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop automated warehouse and sortation system solutions.
You will ensure that structural designs meet customer requirements, coordinate effectively with other trades, minimize installation conflicts, and maintain strong communication with site teams. This role blends technical expertise with collaboration, problem‑solving, and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare structural steel design models using Revit
- Design header steel supporting Material Handling Equipment
- Perform structural analysis using RISA and hand calculations
- Prepare and coordinate structural approval drawings
- Verify accuracy and completeness of all technical project documentation
- Assist in preparation of construction/installation drawings
- Present design/analysis results to Senior Engineers and project stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes and industry standards
- Independently manage engineering design aspects of assigned projects
- Review contract documents for project requirements
- Participate in—and occasionally lead—project or BIM coordination meetings
- Write and review RFIs
- Resolve engineering design issues independently and support others in doing the same
- Coordinate with global suppliers and cross‑functional Vanderlande teams
- Prepare steel volume calculations and specifications with the Project Buyer Steel
- Provide ROMs (Rough Order of Magnitude estimates) for steel quantities and budget
- Lead multidisciplinary process improvements and design optimizations
- Manage steel construction scope, planning, and budget control for large or complex projects
- Translate conceptual details into full system-level designs
- Review layouts, load calculations, egress, stairs, and step‑overs with the Engineer of Record and architect
Requirements
- Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering with Structural Emphasis (Master’s preferred)
- 5 plus years of structural design experience
- Ability to travel up to 10%
- Strong understanding of structural mechanics and design fundamentals
- Intermediate RISA proficiency preferred
- Understanding of steel fabrication, installation methods, and quality control
- Awareness of cost implications for steel structure design
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and structural software (RISA, STAAD.pro, etc.)
- Basic understanding of Material Handling Systems
- Knowledge of scope management and project planning
- Ability to perform health and safety risk analysis
- Strong communication and expectation‑setting skills
- Ability to prioritize effectively under time‑sensitive conditions
- Proactive, adaptable, and collaborative with strong problem‑solving skills
- Ownership mindset and commitment to project success
