Hi, I’m Jeanette, looking for a Summer 2026 Strategic Metallurgy Intern.

Who Am I?

I am an experienced metallurgist with many years at Carpenter.  I have mentored other metallurgists and look forward to training new employees/interns.

What Do We Do?

Business Unit: Strategic Metallurgy

The majority of the Strategic Metallurgy Group's projects are qualifications at both the Reading and Athens Plants.

Ongoing Projects

Ongoing projects include: the Reading Plant Bearing Steel qualification and the Athens process qualifications.  Work includes interfacing with Product and Process Metallurgists, observing production and testing, performing metallography, performing data analysis and documenting results.

Your Role as an Intern

You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:

• Support of Bearing Steel LRIP
• Development of immersion sonic technique for surface microstructure features
• Support Athens VAR 7-10 qualification

What Do We Require?

You must be:

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science with a preference for a rising junior or senior.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Willing and able to work on-site at our Reading, PA  location.
• Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter’s government contracts.
• Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Pay Range

Hourly rates are based on: 1 – Program of study; 2 – Degree type (i.e., Bachelor’s); 3 – Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $21.00-$25.00 per hour.

Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)

Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.
