Description:
Furnishes sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment and services for the care and treatment of patients. Adheres to MercyOne's performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Decontaminates dirty equipment and supplies.
- Sorts items for proper handling and cleaning.
- Selects cleaning process and level of decontamination required.
- Receives, sorts and cleans instruments and equipment in accordance with policies and AAMI standards.
- Disassembles surgical instrument trays and equipment according to manufacture’s recommendations.
- Decontaminates and processes instrumentation through washer disinfector or sonic cleaner.
2. Prepares non-sterile portable equipment and supplies for use.
- Assures proper care, handling/assembly and storage of equipment.
- Makes rounds to collect dirty equipment and supplies.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and fills requests according to procedures.
- Responsible for cleaning hospital equipment according to manufactures guidelines.
- Distributes clean hospital equipment, sterile and non-surgical instruments to patient care areas.
3. Instrument assembly
- Inspects and assembles instruments in accordance with Pick card.
- Wraps instruments in accordance with specifications.
- Loads and unloads sterilization cart and stores items in proper location.
- Inspects and assembles all instrument trays, kits, packs and instruments according to the prescribed manner, using content lists as a guide.
- Wraps instrument sets and items and marks items with identifying data.
4. Distributes and stores sterile supplies.
- Prepares case carts.
- Delivers equipment and supplies as scheduled or requested.
- Identifies and communicates need for additional inventory.
- Assembles case carts completely using the preference cards/resource maps as a guide.
5. Sterilization of equipment
- Loads and unloads sterilization cart and stores items in proper location.
- Uses proper technique for processing and transporting sterile items.
- Correctly identifies and sorts instrumentation for appropriate method of sterilization.
- Operates and monitors steam sterilizers and other designated pieces of equipment.
- Labels, loads, records and sterilizes items according to procedure as documented by sterilization logs.
- Distributes and stores all processed trays, instruments and equipment in designated areas.
- Performs, incubates, interprets and records biological test results according to procedure as documented by the biological documentation log.
- Implements recall procedure when a positive biological test is discovered according to policy.
6. MercyOne Cedar Falls - Transports Patients.
- Selects appropriate mode of transportations and equipment needed.
- Checks patient identification to ensure correct patient and chart are transported.
- Performs patient preparation activities under the direction of an R.N.
- Consults with nursing staff as needed.
- Works to ensure patient safety and comfort.
- Responds to emergency situations and takes appropriate action.
- Cleans and resets operating / procedure rooms as required.
7. Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.
- Attends required safety programs.
- Appropriately and consistently uses the personal protective equipment required of the job.
- Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster and other emergency situations.
- Actively participates in regularly scheduled drills (Code Red, Green, etc.) and regulatory safety standards.
- Completes and appropriately routes incident reports in a timely manner.
- Uses equipment safely and appropriately.
- Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.
- Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved.
- Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.
8. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Experience: Minimum of six (6) months experience working with surgical instruments and assisting in patient care (preferred).
