Staff Systems Engineer

Warren, Michigan, United States of America Full time

Job Description

The Team:
Join a team that builds the brains behind the machine! The Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls (VMEC) team in GM’s Software and Services organization is at the core of vehicle control—developing the software and calibrations that orchestrate everything from internal combustion engines and hybrid drive units to high-voltage batteries, chassis, thermal systems, and beyond.

Our mission is to continuously invent and refine how the world's best mechatronic systems are controlled.

The Role:

We are seeking a Staff Systems Engineer to serve as a VMEC subject matter expert for outsourced software and calibration processes. In this role, you will lead the definition and governance of supplier requirements, ensure compliance across engineering teams, and drive best practices for purchased software. You will leverage extensive experience working with suppliers to build strong partnerships, resolve complex challenges, and ensure alignment with organizational standards. The position requires strong technical expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to influence process improvements across the organization.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Develop, maintain, and release supplier requirements CG documents, and manage process documentation within Stages to ensure clarity, compliance, and alignment across teams.
  • Establish record retention guidelines and provide permanent storage locations in VMEC Outsourced Software and Calibration site within Global Docs.
  • Champion knowledge sharing by designing and delivering impactful training sessions that empower engineering teams to meet compliance requirements for outsourced software and calibration processes.
  • Provide strategic guidance and conduct thorough audits of engineering teams during sourcing and supplier management activities, ensuring adherence to VMEC standards and driving continuous improvement.
  • Build strong partnerships with purchasing and legal teams to support contract negotiations and evolve commercial requirement definitions, fostering alignment between technical and business objectives.
  • Drive integration between in-house development workflows and outsourced supplier processes, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and quality across all deliverables.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams beyond VMEC to establish, promote, and institutionalize best practices for purchased software and calibration processes, influencing enterprise-wide standards.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Extensive experience in software and calibration sourcing, supplier management, and process governance, with a proven track record of delivering results in complex, cross-functional environments.
  • Strong understanding of VMEC processes and outsourced software/calibration lifecycle, with the ability to translate technical requirements into actionable strategies.

People Skills:

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, foster strong partnerships with peers, and influence process improvements through collaboration, consensus-building, and thought leadership.
  • Exceptional communication, documentation, and training skills, enabling clear alignment across engineering, purchasing, and legal teams.
  • Strong analytical, auditing, and problem-solving skills, combined with the ability to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master’s degree or relevant certifications in systems engineering, software process management, or related disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience with CGs, Stages documentation, and G-Docs record retention systems, demonstrating expertise in compliance and governance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with automotive or large-scale software and calibration development environments, with the ability to integrate best practices across diverse teams.

Company Vehicle:

Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.

Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
