About the role:

The Intensive Care Staff Specialist role primarily provides care for patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and ensures the safe delivery of interventions in an acute care environment. The role encompasses leadership as the Senior Medical Officer lead of the hospital-wide Medical Emergency Team (MET), including oversight of service delivery, clinical governance and quality measures. Encompassed in the role is input on step-down ICU patients on the wards, along with post-deterioration patients. Furthermore, the role encompasses the oversight of the hospital-wide medical handover, ensuring the safe handover of these patients from shift changes. The role requires participation in weekend and after hours on-call rosters, as rostered in the ICU department. Participation in ECMO retrievals roster is subject to St. Vincent’s accrediting the staff specialist.

Selection Criteria:

  • Possess, or be eligible to possess, specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM) of Australia and New Zealand, or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialist’s State Award, and a Medicare provider number.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and high standards of clinical practice in Intensive Care Medicine commensurate to experience which is appropriate to the requirements of the position: possess experience at consultant level in the management of critically ill and post-operative patients, including cardiopulmonary transplant, mechanical cardiac assist devices and extra-corporeal life support.
  • Significant experience in cannulation, initiation and longitudinal management of extra-corporeal life support, including retrieval and inter-hospital transfer.
  • Experience in leading a medical emergency team including leading quality assurance to define and achieve key performance indicators for such service.
  • Demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary education, with experience and training in high-fidelity simulation and its delivery in a critical care setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that support and foster innovation to create a learning culture, proven ability to improve the quality of services and patient care outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multi-disciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience.
