You are passionate about modern technology stacks and working to deliver better outcomes for CBA’s customers, employees, and the wider community
We are embarking on an exciting Digital Transformation program and are ready to push the boundaries and deliver engineering best practices to elevate the digital experience of our customers
Together we will innovate the future of banking with state-of-the-art AI Powered Engineering solutions
Do work that matters
At Retail Technology, we build the platforms and experiences that power the financial lives of millions of Australians. This is engineering at real scale, solving complex problems with modern architecture, AI and automation-first thinking. The work sits at the core of digital banking and is transforming how customers buy homes and interact with one of Australia’s most trusted brands.
As a Staff Software Engineer in the Apply with Ease Software Engineering Chapter, reporting directly to the Chapter Lead, you will play a pivotal role in a major transformation that reshapes how we deliver value to our customers. You will lead the design and delivery of cloud-native AWS solutions that enable us to decommission our legacy Pega platform, modernising our technology landscape with scalable, resilient and future-ready architecture. This transformation goes beyond lift-and-shift it embeds AI-driven capabilities and agentic agents into the core of our platforms, enabling intelligent automation, real-time decisioning and personalised customer journeys.
The solutions you build will power secure, seamless and intuitive experiences at scale, redefining how customers interact with us. This is more than a technical role it is a strategic leadership opportunity at the intersection of engineering and innovation. You will lead large-scale initiatives end-to-end, shaping architecture that leverages AI, automation and cloud-native patterns to unlock new capabilities across the domain.
Through deep hands-on expertise and strong technical judgment, you will guide teams through complex delivery, uplift engineering standards and influence enterprise-wide technology direction. By combining technical excellence with forward-looking thinking, you will help create exceptional, intelligent services that deliver meaningful impact for our customers and position us at the forefront of modern digital engineering.
See yourself in our team:
The Apply with Ease Software Engineering Chapter drives the evolution of CBA’s lending workflow and verification capabilities. Embedded within the Simple Operations Work Manager squad, we engineer the systems that manage loan applications from third-party and direct channels into Work Challenge, powering prioritisation, workflow progression, settlement, verification, document certification, and broker communications.
Our Credit Officers rely on robust, intuitive systems to validate applications efficiently, while lenders and brokers benefit indirectly from the speed, stability, and intelligence we build into every release. As we strategically transition away from Pega toward a modernised architecture, we are transforming verification through automation, designing a scalable, resilient Verification Engine that systematises rules, integrates with trusted data sources, and enables real-time, auto-verification at scale.
We eliminate manual evidence requirements, reduce operational overhead, and deliver faster, smarter outcomes for customers. We empower Engineers to challenge the status quo and directly shape the future of CBA’s digital Apply with Ease experience.
We’re interested in hearing from people who can:
Set technical direction across a Chapter, defining modern engineering standards (TypeScript, React/modern JS frameworks, GraphQL, Node.js/Express) and uplifting consistency across the stack.
Lead full-stack, end-to-end delivery, owning solution design across the entire lifecycle from discovery and architecture through build, integration, testing, deployment, and production optimisation.
Drive strategic technical uplift, partnering with Chapter leadership to modernise legacy systems, strengthen engineering practices, and accelerate adoption of emerging technologies.
Architect intelligent, scalable systems, designing high-performance GraphQL APIs and resilient backend services alongside performant, accessible front-end experiences using TypeScript and modern JavaScript frameworks.
Champion engineering excellence, elevating code quality, security, observability, and CI/CD maturity while embedding robust governance and secure-by-design principles.
Mentor and multiply capability across modern engineering practices, coaching teams in full-stack architecture, API design, and scalable system design to strengthen Chapter-wide expertise.
Bring experience integrating AI-enabled capabilities into platforms responsibly and effectively, ensuring solutions are explainable, secure, and aligned to enterprise standards.
