Job Overview

The Design & Research teams play a crucial role in Coursera’s success by gathering learner and educator insights and translating them into recommendations that help Coursera achieve a seamless experience across its platform.

As a Staff Product Designer, you will lead the design strategy and execution for a major product or feature area within the Learning Content Experience. You’ll collaborate across multiple pods and partner closely with product, engineering, research, and data science teams to craft learner and educator experiences that are cohesive, accessible, and impactful.

Your work will involve creating clarity from ambiguity and translating complex problems into simple, elegant, and inclusive solutions that scale globally. Our goal is to make education accessible to all, and we need exceptional designers like you to help realize this vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design vision, strategy, and execution for a major product or feature area—shaping its strategic direction while ensuring design quality and craft excellence across every stage of the product lifecycle.
  • Define and navigate highly ambiguous and complex problem spaces, leveraging insights across customer, business, and operational areas to frame initiatives and advocate for a strategic perspective and vision across related pods.
  • Partner closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and data scientists to design and ship high-quality, scalable, and inclusive product experiences.
  • Partner with research and data leads to synthesize quantitative and qualitative insights into cohesive, actionable design recommendations.
  • Design new functionality within existing systems and drive the definition and socialization of new frameworks that guide cohesive and scalable execution.
  • Engage technical partners in shaping business logic and implementation decisions to ensure human-centered, technically sound solutions.
  • Mentor and provide feedback to designers across pods, raising the bar for design quality, storytelling, and collaboration.
  • Communicate design rationale effectively to influence cross-functional stakeholders and align on product direction.
  • Model design excellence and foster a culture of feedback, craft rigor, and continuous improvement within your team and across the organization.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7-9 years of experience as a UX or Product Designer, with a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of complex solutions across one or multiple product areas.
  • Mastery of core UX methods—including facilitating workshops, conducting user research, synthesizing insights, creating user flows, defining information architecture, and producing wireframes and prototypes—with the ability to guide teams from discovery through delivery and ensure decisions are grounded in user needs.
  • Strong interaction and visual design skills, with experience leveraging and contributing to design systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to design responsive, mobile-first experiences informed by user research and data insights.
  • Proficiency in design and collaboration tools such as Figma, FigJam, and related platforms.
  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills, with proven success collaborating with PMs, engineers, researchers, and data scientists.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing AI-driven products and using AI tools in design, including prompt-based interactions and best practices.
  • Experience designing for consumer SaaS, enterprise, or EdTech platforms, or mobile-first applications.
  • Experience mentoring other designers or contributing to design community programs.
  • Experience using AI for product design and development and evangelizing best practices
  • Passion for education, learning transformation, and Coursera’s mission to make world-class learning accessible to everyone.
